SD Card Icons for System 7

Hey Folks!

I've noticed a lot of YouTubers and others have changed their main drive name to "Macintosh SD." I've done the same! To that end I thought it was time to make a SD card icon for System 7.

Disclaimer: I am not an artist. I took some inspiration from some other icons and some AI generations to try and make these.

I made a black and a blue version using Icongrapher 2.4 on MacOS 9.2.2. They contain versions from 32-bit down to 1-bit. Happy to provide the files on request if someone wants to change them.

They are free to use, remix, and modify. Maybe you'll even make a better version than this, or maybe someone will do a cool one for System 8. Below are the previews and links:

These are pretty good!

I have made nothing like this myself, but I will observe that to fit in with the Sys6/7 era stylistically, they should probably be mostly black and white, with only small amounts of highlight colour. I’m still not sure (after 30 years!) whether I completely agree with that level of minimalism, but that’s how they did it then.

Boy do I have some good news for you!

When you made an icon back in the day, you also had to make its alternative color versions so as you scaled down colors, for say like a game at 16 Colors or Black and White there would still be an icon.

So on both the black and the blue I went with this for the Black and White Version:

I think it looks nice, BUT......there if we want to be accurate for System 6, then really it should be an outline of the device, just like how the Floppy is a wire frame. So that being said, I just made this real fast for any purists out there:

See the attached file below for a Black version of the card at 256 colors, and the wire frame System 6 version at Black and White.

Enjoy!
