PowerBook G3 (Lombard)

Today I got me a PowerBook G3 "Lombard". I think it's a nice B-Day gift.

It had a corrupt install of OS X, but that was fixed. 400Mhz, 18Gig HD, 192 MB Ram, Apple 2X DVD ROM, and a fresh install of OS 10.2.

One question, the battery is in there but it shows a 0% of Charge when its plugged in. My guess is that either the battery is dead, the battery is not being identified, or I need to charge it (when I try to, the little light does not stay on, don't know if it's supposed to) Help would be appreciated.

RE: Uh oh, it's giving me the circle with the line through it again after the Apple Logo, what do I do? I installed only disk one of the OS 10.2 Package. Is that the problem? Mac OS 9.2.2 was not installed prior to this.

I've had the circle-slash thing times-a-plenty with my Lombard. Is the HD a Toshiba? If so, try formatting it as Mac OS Extended, but not journaled.

I can't tell you how many problems I've had with Jaguar and that freaking sign. It all stopped once I formatted my drive as non-journaled.

About the battery, try loading OS 9 on the machine and running the battery reset utility from Apple's website. That utility has brought a battery back to life for me once before.

Nice score; I loved my Lombard when I was using it. Ever since I got my PowerBook G4, it's been sitting under my table, but I take it out every now and then.

The HD is an IBM. Is there any way to run the Battery utility on OS X? Is there a version for OS X?

No, that application was designed for OS 9 only. If the utility from Apple doesn't work, you could always try "Battery Amnesia", but I've never used it.

Also, you might want to try running 10.3, or 10.4 if you get just a bit more RAM. They're much more compatible OSes, and 10.3+ was something else that I found was a great help with that prohibitory sign problem.

There is one way ... download a Disk Tools floppy and boot from that. Then find the (previously downloaded) Battery Reset on your HD and clicky click. That or any 8.6-9.x bootable CD, like Hardware Test or Techtool.

Yes. It needs Disk 2 to complete the install. Presence or absence of OS 9 isn't a factor.

That machine will also take 10.3.

I've only got Disc 1 of Jaguar, and I've successfully installed using it. All that disk 2 has is crap like iCal, iTunes, Safari, etc. IIRC, you don't use Disk 2 until you reboot into the installed OS, and you can just click cancel on the dialog box that comes up.

Yeah there is really no need for disk 2, I have installed Jag hundreds of times without disk 2. Just un check everything possible.
