Power key won't boot machine?

For some weird reason my 9600 won't boot with the power key on the keyboard. When I press it, I hear the chime and the computer is running, but it just won't boot into the OS. If I press the power button on the 9600 itself however, it starts up fine.

Does it work on any other machines? Because I'd think faulty keyboard/cable. Maybe the PSU. Wait until unity or Uniserver sees this thread.

Whats not working right lately, the keyboard or 9600?

Is the machine unplugged when not in use? How old is the PRAM battery? Otherwise it may need a re-cap. I can only assume like Macs before the startup circuit has different paths for the power button and keyboard input. Thus if caps go one method can work, the other not. I've ran into this with the IIcx for example. Keyboard would not boot it, power button would. Once uniserver did a re-cap, all was well!

Weird. As I said though the 9600 turns on -- the HD spins up and the LED on both the 9600 and the keyboard comes on, it just doesn't boot into the OS. My screen stays black.

It's got a new PRAM battery, and my old one is still good.

Well thats what I get for speed reading and doing four private messages at once while watching Hulu..

I mis-read.

Actually I would have no clue on this one. Try a PRAM re-set. Really the start-up procedure should not matter. I think its more of a coincidence that one method seems to work better than the other. Do you typically try with keyboard first? Is this repeatable - that is if its been working just fine can you shut it down and start it right back up with keyboard and still get a black screen?

Funny... When I hit the power key on the keyboard, wait a bit, then press the power button on the 9600 itself, it shuts down... THEN the power key on the keyboard works. But only in that scenario.

I have another 9600 and it doesn't do this. It's 100%

The Power button the 9600 over rides what you put into the keyboard, so that is a null statement.

Have you tried to reset the 9600 from the keyboard?

As for the keyboard itself, it is the type that the cable can come out of it and you need to plug both to the cable? If so, have you tried the other port (if it has one; the extended keyboard of this type has 2 ports on side of the unit, the regular keyboard has 1 in the middle of the bottom)

Have you tried another keyboard on this 9600?

I believe that it is the keyboard; that if it has ports, the little board inside has cracked solder joints from the cable flexing against it. It's an easy fix but never reflow the solder! Desolder all the joints, clean up the board and then resolder with fresh solder and flux.

9600's seem to be finicky with flat or no PRAM battery on startup... power on, wait for the chime,  give it a few seconds, then power off and on again and it starts. Only seems to be with 9600's best I can tell. I have to do this with mine almost every startup because i havent bought batteries yet.

This sounds consistent with how my Performa 6360 behaved with a dead PRAM battery. Pressing the keyboard button would usually power on, but not always boot the machine- particularly if was disconnected from mains power since the last boot. The case power button would work reliably, though. Maybe it would be worth cleaning the battery holder contacts just to be safe.

I find with my 9600 aside from the usual 9600 double boot quirk, when i has a crap or no PRAM battery, the front power button tends to be a little temperamental and require a few presses to get it to work. Power key will always start it though, and once it has been powered on with the power key i can do the on-off on thing with the button just fine. Only seems to be with a dead or missing battery that it does this.
