The Power button the 9600 over rides what you put into the keyboard, so that is a null statement.
Have you tried to reset the 9600 from the keyboard?
As for the keyboard itself, it is the type that the cable can come out of it and you need to plug both to the cable? If so, have you tried the other port (if it has one; the extended keyboard of this type has 2 ports on side of the unit, the regular keyboard has 1 in the middle of the bottom)
Have you tried another keyboard on this 9600?
I believe that it is the keyboard; that if it has ports, the little board inside has cracked solder joints from the cable flexing against it. It's an easy fix but never reflow the solder! Desolder all the joints, clean up the board and then resolder with fresh solder and flux.
