Hello 68kmla-ers

Recenty i purchaced a Beige desktop G3 and im trying to install a pci usb and a pci firewire card to expand it.

when im restoring from a 9.1 G4 (greek localized) cd, both cards work fine. But when im trying to install from a retail generic cd no matter what extensions i use i cannot use those two cards.

Whats wrong with the systems installed by a retail cds, and why even when i install the "pci adapter card software" that come from apple it doesnt recognize the devices i connect?

the weird thing is that system profiler recognises the card as usb card and firewire card!

does anyone have the slightest idea?

Thanks Nikitas

PS. happy new year vintage lovers!

its 9.2.2 international retail,i have also tried 9.1 international retail but no luck.

on the contraty most custom restore cds do work when i istall the extentions

Weird. All I can recall is that there's a bunch of other extensions that need to be active as well, to do with USB mass storage (I assume you're connecting a drive?) - check and see if they're all installed.

Your other alternative would be to start from the Greek localised install, and use Software Update to get you up to 9.2.2 - but that might be taxing on your download allowance or bandwidth if that's a factor where you are.

i have a mouse connected and a usb stick to check both HID and USB Mass storage support, and an external hard drive on the firewire card.

ive also tried a custom installation for this particular macintosh checking the usb support and the firewire support but nothing happens....

i think it has to do with the mac os rom file, but i havent figured out yet what exactly does it do. i think it somehow replaces the internal rom of the machine and allows support for third paty devices that this machine originaly didnt support.

keep searching..... i hope ill find hardware/macos 9 experts to clear things for me.

I can't see how it would have anything to do with Mac OS ROM - Mac OS ROM is used on NewWorld (basically, iMac and onwards) systems to replace most of the classic Mac ROM (toolbox routines and the like). If I'm correct, with the Beige G3 being OldWorld I don't even think its used.

thats what i thought too! but when i overwrite the mac os rom from the default installation with the one from the custom greek cd the g3 does load the cards!

its very strange indeed as its a old world machine.

anyway i'm using the restore installation made for a g4 machine and it works just fine. i even managed to edit some video through a dv cam and the results are quite good!
