Macintosh SE FDHD MIDI playback help:

ringo

Hi, so recently i got my Macintosh to communicate with my good old mac man midi interface. The midi signals I can confirm that they are working, but there is no direct sound playback out of the Macintosh speaker. I know that most people just bought a interface like the Roland sc-7, but I was wondering if possible is there a sound driver for the Macintosh where I can have the sound playback live midi signals out of the internal Macintosh speakers without any sound interface?

You mean you're sending MIDI to the SE from a keyboard or other MIDI controller and want the Mac to play the notes? I don't know of any software that does that on a 68000 machine. Back in the day on those machines you recorded MIDI into a sequencer like MasterTracks Pro and then played it by sending it out to a synth or module. The Mac itself was never making any of the actual sound.

I gigged for a few years with my Mac SE on stage as the main sequencer.
I used Mastertrax Pro 4 software.

The Mac / Mastertrax did not create any sounds , its just a sequencer. Loads midi file into Masterax , plays midi file and sends the midi to the midi interface

Thats was it

Mastertrax had great midi editing , quantitize , program change , volume - It could take the entire memory dump from your synths with system exclusive - great memories - No internet back then , I had no manuals for mastertrax , just figured it out over the years

I remember there were some programs that acted like soft synths but they were to basic to be of any use

Sorry for late reply. You know. That's smart, I think gigging with a Macintosh not only brings some nostalgia to the audience, but also brings a uniqueness to your band. I always dreamed of getting tons of old 68k macs to line them up together on a stage to make one heck of a synth.

Do you have Quicktime Musical Instruments installed? I'm not sure which OS that would require.

I actually solved the problem, it was due to a bad midi cable. I don't believe I have quick time on my Macintosh SE running system 7.1
