As mentioned in the Conquests thread, I bought an LC III+ yesterday. Its serial number tag includes an actual manufacture date (as many mid-1990s stickers do); this date was given as May 5, 1994.
The sites with specifications, including Apple's own website, list the discontinuation date of the LC III+ as February 14, 1994 (which is also given as the discontinuation date of the original LC III). I have a hunch this is either mismarked or that Apple continued to make computers after the formal discontinuation date, much like they did with the SE (I once had an SE with a 1991 manufacture date and have seen plenty of others; all are marked as "SuperDrive" and were apparently made for the first several weeks in 1991).
My guess is these computers were made to either fill orders for schools or to give schools an inexpensive alternative to the 475 and other newer machines.
The discontinuation date of the Performa 460, the equivalent to the LC III+, is undocumented on Apple's website.
If you have an LC III+, state its manufacture date or serial number so we can try to pinpoint the actual discontinuation date.
