I has a fast (non-Apple)

Alrighty. So I'm presently working on contract to Intel, and have been able to 'play' (evaluate, test, troubleshoot,) systems based on the new "Intel® Core™ i7" processor for a couple months now.

So, of course, when they came out, I had to go buy one. Holy stinkin' crap is this fast. (One of the things I wasn't able to do at work is do serious video encoding.) Whoo-ee. I *REALLY* hope Apple makes a desktop that uses these. (Up until now, Apple has only used notebook chips in everything except the Mac Pro, which uses workstation chips. Sadly, according to sources like Ars Technica and Anandtech, the notebook versions of the i7 aren't due out until late next year; and the Mac Pro is out of my price range...)

I just wish there was an iMovie-like app for Windows that could do AVCHD. (Yes, I tried hacking OS X onto it; absolutely no go.)

Adobe has Premiere Elements too, and both are closer in functionality to Final Cut anyway, including the old Premiere. In fact, a lot of people say it was because of Final Cut and Final Cut Express that Adobe discontinued Premiere and went on to produce Premiere Pro as a Windows-only app. (Until CS3 where it was ported to Intel Mac as well.)

Of course, a Core i7 desktop mac would be completely epic, there's an indication online that Windows may run a bunch of Adobe's apps better anyway. http://macanimationpro.digitalmedianet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=58947

It's based on AfterEffects, but who knows whether or not it would be any different for Photoshop or whatever other app. I may run the test myself at some point using a fresh+updated install of Leopard and Vista Business on my iMac, with the trial versions of either CS3 or CS4.

Which i7 system are you using, Anonymous Freak, or did you end up building your own?

Built my own. All I needed was motherboard, proc, and RAM, recycled the rest of the parts from my previous desktop PC. (Then recycled the remaining parts down to my son's PC.)

While I have spent some money on this system; I would still gladly buy a Mac that is based on i7 if/when it comes out. (Based on the desktop, not server procs. A Mac Pro is still out of my price range.) While a headless mini-tower would be nice; an iMac would be okay, too. (I still don't have a 'good' monitor for my PC; relying on an old Blueberry 15" Apple Studio Display and a 19" ViewSonic CRT that displays very high resolution, but is a complete power hog; so I usually just use the Studio Display.)

I am one of those who believes that the two products I really want, Apple no longer makes:

1. A high-end headless desktop computer; not a workstation, not an all-in-one made with laptop parts. (The beige G3 was the last computer that fit this bill. The Cube was close, but still too much of a compromise of form over function.)

2. A true subnotebook. The 12" PowerBook was the last Apple notebook I really liked. The MacBook Air could have been perfect, if only the footprint had been shrunk to the minimum necessary for a full-size keyboard, like the 12" PB was. (The 2400c was the last one that fits this to me. The 12" PB and the 12" iBooks were oh-so-close, but still, ironically, went for function over form too much for this category! Again, the MBA would be absolutely perfect if it had an 11.5" screen.)

An easy but powerful program like iMovie for Windows is what I have been craving since I first saw iLife.
You wouldn't be able to run it on 512MBs of RAM anyways. ;)
I should update that now that I have 1.5 GB...

I have toyed with Premier Elements, though it isn't as easy as iMovie. It may be more powerful, though iMovie gets it done well.

I use iMovie 6 because its simple, and has enough effects to be useful. Plus it has those dvd menu looking things that you can put pictures into/video. The only thing I would use Final Cut Express for is the split screen thing. Thats really all that was missing from version 6 to make it a replacement to FCE.

I'm hoping and praying that the new iMacs (which should arrive in January) will be using the i7 cpu, at least the top of the range one. I've been holding on to my late '06 one as nothing since has been really worth the upgrade price but the i7 would be by all accounts.

Very much so. At this point, if Apple doesn't come out with an i7 Mac until the laptop chips arrive; I will not be buying a desktop Mac. I'll replace my MacBook Pro with an i7 MBP whenever they arrive; but no way am I buying a desktop with a laptop chip in it. (Plus, I don't really want to wait that long...)
