How much can I get for my G5?

it's a Dual core, 2.0GHZ, 16GB ram, 1.4TB HDD's, Nvidia 6600LE Vid card, Pioneer DVD DL?

Where can I find a GOOD pcie Video card (in case I do not sell my G5) better than the Nvidia 6600LE card?

Well over $1500 $1000 for a setup like that. Snow Leopard depreciated the value somewhat (irrational people who think PPC is worthless now because it can't run Snow Leopard).

1500.00? WOW!!! I didn't think it would be that much... I posted it up on craigslist for 800.00 then lowered it to 600.00 and I got no-shows.

Then I was looking at it and I'm like How can I get rid of my G5...........

I also have a iLugger for it... I like to keep my stuff like new and that was my thinking when I bought the iLugger, I've seen more than enough G5 busted up... :-(

I have no problem with keeping the G5, people say a mac mini is faster... of course it is, it is 3 generations of chips ahead of the G5... But the G5 is faster than the newest MM IN SOME THINGS...

I am so anal with the G5 that when I clean it, I clean it!!! Fans get taken out and cleaned the PS get's 2 cans of air in the PS to make sure there is not dust in the or on the fans. AND some of the aluminum gets waxed so it does't bubble like on some G5's i've seen...

I checked eBay. $1500 would be on the high end of what you could sell it for. $1000 would be the minimum.

Sell it on eBay with those specs and I think you could clear $1200. Craigslist is not good for selling top of the line Macs like this, they are not appreciated.

No reason for me to get rid of a good machine...

I'm just looking now for a good video card for it, the Nvidia 6600le is not cutting it anymore...

The best native video card you can get for it is the 7800GT 256MB. I believe this was only ever sold as a BTO option on a new dual core G5 so they're quite hard to find.

You can flash certain models of PC 7800 or 7900 with a Mac ROM, and that's usually the cheapest option.

I have also heard that X1800s will work in a G5 but I'm not 100% sure on that one.

I've actually opened my G4 tower power supplies and vacuum then out. It works nicely. I take baby wipes to the cases of all my computers since I think "if it's good for baby which is delicate, then it's good for a computer."

iLugger eh? I was looking into getting one for my iMac G5 back when I had it because I didn't have a laptop at the time so I took it places(not coffee shops mind you). But, now that I have a laptop and I gave my replacement iMac intel to my folks. I don't need one, still it's a neat idea.

$1000? That's crazy! I can't believe they still are worth that much even with the intel switch.

$1000+ for a dual 2.0GHz model?? You guys must be joking right? I've seen QUAD core models selling under $1000 since BEFORE 10.6 came out. Just this past summer I watched a quad 2.5GHz system with 4Gb of RAM sell for $750. A 2.0GHz model (dual core or DP) is worth maybe $450-$500 on a good day. Yes there's a TON of RAM in there, but its the still just 2.0GHz and out of Applecare. Anyone with $1000+ to spend on a Mac can get a new iMac that will smoke the G5, and it includes a screen. Sorry if I come off as rude, but the G5 got screwed as far as resale value is concerned.

He also said "1.4 TB HDD's" which I assume means two of them (and probably 1.5 TB as I've never seen 1.4 TB). Those are over $100 each new on Pricewatch.

The Pioneer DVD DL is worth about $50 if you consider the brand name.

So that's around $450 - $500 in upgrades.

None the less, the G5 did get screwed with 10.6 BUT it will not stop working B/C of that...

How many people actually buy a new OS when it first comes out, I myself do not go out of my way to upgrade to a new OS.

If I bought a new computer and received the newest OS that is when I only upgraded...

But in this economy, I'm laid off so I won't be buying anything...

I am teaching myself web design and desktop publishing and that is why I was debating on getting rid of the G5 and get a Mac Mini for that...

But with a MM I could not have 16GB ram in it. I did buy (Off eBay) an ATI X1900 G5 Mac® Edition for $175.00 to replace my nvidia 6600LE 128 mb...

Thats all very true, but the system as a whole isn't worth that much. Sometimes it makes more sense to part out a system than to sell it as one unit. If it were a quad 2.5GHz or even a highly desired DC 2.3GHz model (because its the fastest to run without the liquid cooling) the price is higher. If he can find someone to pay that much, then thats great. But with brand new Macs and even faster G5's for around the same price or less, its a hard item to sell for what it may be truly worth.

Sure, yeah. If $500 in upgrades only added $200 to the selling price, I would strip it down to base, sell the upgrades separately then sell the G5, get some more money that way.

I think we could all agree that a base spec working condition dual G5 at this point in time, is for general purposes, worth more than $1 and less than $5000.

You'd be lucky to get $700. Honestly, you're insane to think you'll get more, or the buyer is a sucker. They're almost vintage. You never get your investment back with upgrades, and a lower end G5 dual 2.0 ghz is hardly worth $350. Just keep it, its not really worth selling and I am sure it's plenty fast for what you use it for.

well it isn't vintage yet... it is still a very capable machine and the difference from 2.0GHZ to 2.3 is not much, only 300MHZ anyways... and with 16 gb ram this thing doesn't stutter...

Vintage is a color classic, performa 6500, or even a powermac g3...

It's like a used car. Someone may replace the engine and all major support parts costing the person 5 grand in parts. But the car's only worth maybe 3 grand. This happens all the time.
