Help a nooby mac owner with an Lc II

wow that is some nasty cap goo that has leaked all over your pcb there...  pretty gross,   you will need a cap job on that bad boy asap.
In seeing the pictures just now, I have to agree - that is some bad cap goo leakage you got there. I recommend one person for the job and that's Uniserver...

Simple nose test - place your nose close to the board - does it smell like fish or seafood going bad?

Also get the VRAM in the machine first and see if that improves things. If it works, horray! Time to rescue it before the the Cap Good damages it. Clean the board with some strong (99%) Isopropyl Alcohol and a tooth brush over the rough areas.

The '040 Mac can wait until you get this one fixed up and going first.

just to keep you informed and thanks for all the help.

the mac boots every time now with a 256k Vram installed, works great, because im not using a genuine apple monitor I cant force it into 512x384 so im stuck in 640x480 and B&W or few colours for most games (looks on evilbay for a 512k Vram).

but alas I got bitten so I now own Quadra 610 040/25 with 1mb Vram and atm 20mb ram and soon to be 3gb scsi drive with 7.5.3 installed,

Is there anyone here in the UK that can either sell me or point me in the direction of an affordable Apple cdrom drive, I'm looking for functionality not looks so if it just sits in the bay (without the cradle and the front bezel removed I don't mind) but if a caddy and bezel is around all the better.

an external apple cdrom would be good or even a scsi zip 100 drive as I have ide zip in my P1-233 and a USB zip 100 also.

being a complete novice with 68k mac am I right in saying if I want to boot of a cd rom it has to be an apple drive as the driver is built into the cd rom firmware ??

so if i get a 3rd party scsi cdrom I have to install 3rd party driver to enable it in mac os and it wont boot to install an OS if I needed to.

anyway thanks for the help and reading my dribble.

kev.

Congrats on you getting your LCII to work! But you should at least save up those pennies and get a recap done in it. It is overdue for one, and it is best to get it done while it still works instead of after leaking caps and their goo kills it.

And congrats on the Quadra 610... Good luck on getting the CD ROM drive.

an apple 12x cdrom and a caddy arrived today untested.

in 7.5.3 it shows nothing but boots a mac os8 install cd every time,

with a little googling I format a mac 1.4mb fdd , open it on my pc with HFVExplorer and binary copy stuffit and the apple cdom drivers. install on the mac and hey presto cdrom drive mounts.

steep learning curve for me. I was tempted to install mac OS8 then the 8.1 update but it complains the 3gb scsi HDD (I replaced 160mb that just died) is not an apple drive and i wimp out and press cancel :)

ive been messing about for a few hours now and all seems great, the ram works great 36mb now installed 2x16mb :)

thanks all for your help.
