G5 & G4 Tower!

Tonight I just picked up a G5 1.8ghz DP and a 400mhz G4 Tower.

The weird thing is apparently they removed the hard drives before selling them to me, yet there is a drive in both computers. The G5 is missing the optical drive, guide screws, and the hard drive that was installed was on the IDE port and was not secured. It is also very dusty.

I have not booted either one up yet.

To add to the awesome conquest he offered me a 19" LG LCD and a PC Tower of some variety. Apparently a home server of some kind. Haven't brought it up yet.

All of this cost me $140 CDN.

EDIT: The G5 and G4 work. The G4 boots into 10.3.9 and the G5 just goes to a '?'

The PC tower is has an ASUS board with Duel sockets but only one filled, 4 DDR slots (2 filled), no hard drive, burner (its going into the G5) and a sparkle PSU. It has XP Pro serial and keys for the case.

Indeed it is. I noticed that all the RAM slots were occupied but only 512MB was recognized. Further inspection showed that the 2nd pair of RAM are 1GB but not visible. I reinstalled the big sticks in the 1st pair and known RAM in the 2nd pair. Still no go for the 2nd pair.

I'm guessing it has something to do with the amount of dust inside might have done something. I will try a PRAM reset as well...maybe that will work.

ASD 2.5.8, which can be found if you google it, will do a lengthy RAM test and give a report on RAM, the logic board and other components. The thing will sound like a rocket (fans) for the 120 mins. or so it takes, but it is worth the trouble.

ASD will also recalibrate the processors if necessary.

Using iStat Pro, I found that new arctic silver made a big difference in core temperatures of a dual 1.8 G5 that came into my possession a couple of months ago. A G5 tower is a small hassle to disassemble, but not more than a hassle—i.e., removal and renovation of the processors is not as bad as it looks. You will need a decent toolkit and a disassembly guide, but those are out there if you go looking. You don't necessarily need one specific to the dual 1.8s (note that there were several versions of that machine), since the screw locations and specifications are the same.

I appreciate the advice. I ran ASD 2.5.8 and it found that the RAM slots are bad immediately. I am going to test the other components and recalibrate the CPU as you suggest.

It certainly does sound like a jet when it is running!

EDIT: Seems like everything else is working fine except the 2 RAM slots.
