G3 iMac empty cases, but what should they look like?

Hi all,

I have some empty iMac cases, with no computer or monitor in them. They are the slot loading model, which I have had nothing to do with in the past.

These ones all have, underneath where the monitor is, but not where the computer guts go, a white board that has no resistors or capacitors, but diagrams indicating where they should go and holes for them. Is this standard, are these display models, or are they replacements for broken machines? It just doesn't look right, and I figure if anyone knows, it will be you guys.

I agree - post up some pics. Out of curiousity does it have a real CRT or a imitation plastic tube in the shape of a CRT? The display cases had an imitation tube that from the outside looked almost identical to a real CRT, but was nothing more than a piece of plastic in the shape of a CRT.

It's pretty hard to take pictures. Instead of the monitor, there is a plastic screen on the front replicating the monitor look, and instead of the back of a CRT, there is a tapered black tube running all the way to the back of the unit with a silver ring. See picture below:

Yep, thats exactly what I mean - what you have there is a dummy iMac case, Apple sent them to dealers back in the day to put out on display in the event that they didn't have real iMacs to set up on display. For what its worth, the actual frame and case parts themselves are actually identical (and therefore swappable) with the same parts used on a real slot load iMac.

Are they worth anything? I was considering selling them due to the space they take up.

They sound perfect for MacQuaria and casemods. I doubt they're worth anything. Maybe dismantle one and offer the compatible pieces on ebay as case replacement parts, see how you go.

I think that's kinda nifty. If I had one of those suckers, I'd put whatever awesome new guts would fit in it without the guilt of tearing apart an iMac That or make a cool little bed for my cats.

With Imac G3 suffering from FBT failure,everybody will end up with one of those anyway. :-/

Personally I think the best use for them really, is to use the case plastics from them to replace damaged parts on real iMacs...especially the inner front plastic, which tends to crack due to the heat, which the inner front plastic piece in a display iMac case obviously will not have been subjected to.

Good advice, wanted to do something different this weekend so I've started gutting a non-working Tangerine iMac to turn it into iCat retro bed.
