Enabler for Macintosh LC III?

I'm trying to boot a Mac LC III with a generic install of System 7.1, and getting an error message at boot-up time complaining that 7.1 won't work and I need a newer System. But as far as I know, System 7.1 should work on the LC III, and is the OS it shipped with originally. Do I need a special LC III enabler or some other magic, maybe?

That's a very nice resource for system software versions and enablers.  I just wish it would print up better; I'm saving it as a pdf for future reference.

Thanks!

That worked, thank you! This is the first time I've successfully booted with this logic board. A note for people who are as clueless as me: the enabler file needs to go into the System folder, not the Extensions folder.

One oddity: in "About this Macintosh", it simply says "Macintosh" without identifying the model. There's also a blank space where I believe an icon is supposed to appear.

I think rebuilding the desktop may resolve that issue, as I've seen it mentioned before as a solution, but never tried it myself. It's easy enough to do to see if it works. Restart while holding down the OPTION + COMMAND keys.
