DVD Solutions?

My PM9600 needs a DVD & DVD-RAM burner. So I´m asking you today about working setups you use.

The possibilities are:

1) SATA?

There is still no SATA PCI-card working in any PCI Mac (except G3 up) because of the PCI 2.0 (5V) specifications - is there? So this is no solution.

2) IDE

Many IDE-cards do not reach the ATAPI specifications like the Sonnet ones. How about Acard? Has anyone of you a working setup with a AEC-6280M with an DVD-burner?

3) FireWire 400

Which cheap enclosures are working with toast 5? Or better question; which bridge-chip is working without any problems? Which burner to buy?

Sonnet Tempo SATA?

avw, you should know that's not true by now. We have members here who have successfully used the Sonnet Tempo in pre-G3 Macs.

See this topic, which you actually posted in yourself:

Scroll down a bit, and coius talks about SATA with his 9500, 7200 and 7500.

I know the thread from last year ;) But I got no real answer if everything worked well. I also can use my Projovian - with sometimes some data-loss. That´s too much money for testing along, ... As I´m now looking for a DVD, I will not test all other SATA cards as long as somebody shows up and tell me he got his SATA card model XY with DVD burner model XY and Toast Titanium running in perfect way. Able to write DVD-Rams DVD+ and DVD-

I've been an owner of a Sonnet ATA/133 card for years now and it has been both fast and reliable. What's wrong with their controllers?

Who told something is wrong? Their support tells SATA card cannot be used in 5V PCI Slots, and ATA/133 doesn´t reach ATAPI standard for DVDs, it´s just for harddiscs. If you got a DVD burner connected to your ATA/133 which works well, give me information to trust you more than Sonnets support ;)

But it all isn´t about Sonnet, I also won´t go out for a Acard without any hint that recent DVD burners work with it.

So please tell me your working DVD setups from 7500 to 9600.

I have both a DVD-ROM drive and a Pioneer DVD-RW drive on my Acard 6280M and they both work fine. There's also a 40 GB and a 400 GB hard drive on the card.

The Pioneer is a DVR-111D. The DVD-ROM is a no-name I bought at Frys or somewhere years ago.

The Acard is in a Umax S900 motherboard (8500/9500 clone) and I'm running OS 7.6.1 through 9.1 depending on the situation. I use the DVD-RW drive with Toast Titanium 5.23 and I've burned DVDs on it, although Toast 8's built-in compression utility is much nicer so usually I do DVD burning on the OSX machine.

I'm currently using a PowerLogix 1 GHz G3 upgrade in the machine although I've used these drives with an earlier G3 upgrade. I watch DVDs on the machine using a Wired4DVD card.

PCI SATA cards work great in pre-G3 Macs. I have used it in a 7200, 7500, and 9500 perfectly. I have also use a PCI ATA/IDE Card in a PowerMac 7600 and it works fine. I think the card will adjust to the PCI Slots.

I don't think you will have any problem with the PCI cards in those slots. I have never had an issue with ANY PCI card in the older macs. Usually they just don't want to support anything lower than a machine that can run OS X. Which is why they list G3 systems.

Just for the records, i got an Acard 6280M now, and it works perfectly inside my oldworld Macs (7600, 8500, 9600). Both, big IDE-harddisc and DVD-RAM burner work perfectly inside this PCI 2.0 slots.

My Macsense SUA-100E SATA (Projovian), doesn´t work inside my pre-G3 (PCI 2.0). But It works perfectly in G3 DT233 (more modern PCI).
