DVD-RW on an old Mac?

Tonight when I needed to copy some CDs for tomorrow I find out my new iMac doesn't like CDs with paper labels!

I've been wanting to get an older Mac again and I happen to have an ACARD SCSI-ATA adapter thats not getting used. So I could theoretically hook a new DVD-RW drive to whatever old system I pick up.

How far back could I go before I run into problems? I'm sure if I thought about it I could figure it out but my brain is a bit fried from having to come up with alternate plans to get this stuff copied by tomorrow. I'm not talking about watching DVDs. And its not exactly a smart solution for my current problem but I was just wondering. Plus its a weak, illogical justification for having another Mac around!

And does anyone have a copy of Astarte_CD_copy (think that's the name) around?
