I'm looking for a utility similar to Apple Disk Copy which will make disk images of a floppy disk, but will ignore errors instead of failing. That is, I want to copy a disk, no matter what errors it may have. Must work on System 7 or thereabouts.
IIRC, copyIImac did exactly that -- it did a sector-by-sector copy without hanging on errors. If you can't find it, let me know. I'm sure I have it on some disk somewhere...
Ironically, I used Disk Copy to copy that disk just last night! Anyway, that program was so old (1986, I think), it crashed my Mac a second after loading! It's a Quadra 605 with System 7.5.3. So I certainly have it!!
Does it make Disk images? What I want to do is really get all these disks to my Mac mini's hard drive for preservation.
That's pretty funny. I'm not surprised that its aged code caused your more modern Mac to barf bits.
I don't recall if copyiimac makes images; I have a sinking feeling that it doesn't. But if you are looking for a way to archive these things, errors and all, then would simply zipping/binhexing/stuffing them accomplish what you want? Or do you really need them in image form?
Image form is the best solution, while simply archiving the files via StuffIt or Binhex would be the 2nd best solution. Problem is I don't think those programs will ignore errors, either. It will try it and see.
Interestingly enough, there were three disks which gave errors, but after 10 minutes and some warming up (temperature really affects floppy disks) I was able to successfully image them. I'm hoping these last two disks will also work like that.
