Dark Castle

I have Dark Castle on my SE/30 internal hard drive. It launches and plays no problem. I copied the files to an Enermax 20DL external SCSI drive with System 6.0.3. If I boot from the SE/30 from it, Dark Castle launches and plays, no problem. Hurray!

However, if I then plug the Enermax into my Plus, and boot the Plus from it, when I launch Dark Castle it fails with a memory allocation error, prompting me to boot with the floppy. All attempts to boot from the DC system floppy fail.

So this isn't the end of the world, obviously, but does someone have the answer? Why it works fine booting from the Enermax on the SE/30, but not the Plus? The Plus has 4MB of RAM.

cheers all

How much RAM is in the SE/30 vs the Plus? And what extensions you have that are SE/30 Exclusive (like Mode 32)? They should be off or disabled. Also check the memory control panel and shrink the disk cache and other options which maybe huge for the SE/30 but need to be small on the Mac Plus.

Color Dark Castle, or the original B & W Dark Castle from way back when? The original would run on a Mac 512KE, so I do not think that the amount of memory is likely to be the issue if you are running the original.

This is the original B&W Dark Castle. It runs fine on the SE/30 with 68MB of RAM when booted off of the Enermax with 6.0.3. (Obviously only 8MB is used)

I've heard of issues where Dark Castle won't run off of a hard drive, and if I just had my Plus I would assume that was the case. But it works perfectly fine when my SE/30 boots off of the exact same hard drive.

Check your extensions/control panels. I bet there's something there that is causing problems.

Try booting with Extensions off, your Plus may not have enough memory.

Running on the Plus or original SE, Dark Castle requires the "alternate screen buffer" that is available on those Macs. This is not just some memory, but a specific 22KB of it.

If you use MultiFinder, or you have installed either AppleShare or MacsBug, this is no longer available for Dark Castle to use.

So, boot with extensions off and disable MultiFinder.

All I know about Dark Castle is that a really bad port was made on the Sega Genesis haha :) its pretty bad since you have to use the D-pad...
