ClarisWorks 2/Infinite Mac Oddity!

Hi folks,

Earlier this week I ploughed through all my old 100MB Zip disks (they still work) looking for a crude THINK C TCL, MIDI app I'd written that can edit sounds on a Yamaha DX100[1]. I didn't find the app, but I did find my legit copy of ClarisWorks 2.0; which Claris were giving away free at the Hanover tech fair in 1994 on CDs.

Simpler days, simpler licensing agreements! ClarisWorks was probably my most intuitive productivity app: seamless enough to make it faster than notepads and pens for sketching a mix of text and drawings.

I've attached the .cpt of my installation here: a whole 3MB including the Claris XTND translators. You can install it on Infinite Mac, but you'll need to use ResEdit to change the Type to PACT and Creator to CPTP using Get File/Folder info. Note: @mihai I had real problems using the new, snazzy, automatic .zip file translation system. I chose the Q650 and System 7.1. I could drag ClarisWorks2.0.cpt from the Finder to The Outside World; then change the type and creator. I then expanded it using Compact Pro and it produced a folder with a working version of ClarisWorks (which is where I got the first screenshot from). I then dragged the folder to The Outside World:Uploads and it saved it on my MacBook M2 as a .zip, but the .zip appeared corrupted when I tried to expand it on the Mac and also corrupted when I copied it back to the The Outside World:Downloads. I also tried the same with the application itself, which produced a version that couldn't run: error code.

When I dragged it to The Outside World:Downloads it did indeed convert it to a .zip (also attached), but dragging it back (which I've just verified again, using the ClarisWorks.zip attached) leads to:

The apps are certainly different too:

Anyway, Tada! ClarisWorks 2.0!

[1] For the few who don't know, it's a 4-operator, 8 note polyphonic FM synth from the mid-1980s with a 4-octave, non-velocity sensitive, mini keyboard and membrane buttons. I never had one, but I did borrow one for a while from a work colleague in the early 2000s.

Funny; I still remember the smell of the box I got ClarisWorks 2.0 in. Unpackaging it and sticking the floppy in my Mac Plus for the first time....

As far as the zipping goes -- looks to me like you've got stripped metadata? Not sure if Mihai's zip solution is supposed to capture that.

Have you tried manually changing the min and preferred memory size to match the working version of the app?

Impressive! My CW2.0.1 just came in a CD jewel case. They were just literally handing them out at their stand. I remember what the event was actually called, it's called the Hannover Messe (2'n's in German). We were there demonstrating our solid-state storage solutions in spring 1994. It was very exciting to see the Apple stand elsewhere demoing the brand-new Power Macs, showing the full-screen QuickTime video of a Saturn 5 rocket launch on a super-large projection screen. Having seen Apple's projections of RISC vs x86 CPU performance over the 1990s I was enthralled with the idea that the Intel/Microsoft hegemony was finally going to be overcome.

I have a version of CW 1.0 for Windows 3.1 I can run on SoftWindows 3 on my PB1400c/166. It's usable in the sense that CW 1 is usable on a Mac Plus.

Not sure what that is. It's a bit of a puzzle that the non-working version is larger, while apparently missing the SIZE resources.

I wasn't that investigative. I wanted to propagate the British version of CW2.0 as quickly as possible. I'll have a go before too long!
