As the world upgrades...

Curious, how could a G4 possibly be slower?
I think a G3 with a higher clock speed can be faster than a G4 with a lower speed for non-AltiVec apps, and his G4 is only something like 400 or 450 MHz in comparison to the 600 MHz iMac.

Aye. 600mhz G3 compared to a 400mhz G4, and the only AltiVec enabled app I use frequently is Photoshop. Even then, I don't use it too frequently.

I have a G3 iMac 700 and a G4 533 Powermac, and although the iMac does do some things faster, it can't touch the slower G4 in Altivec enabled apps and if I only upgraded the G4 to a 733, I'd be faster than the iMac in everything and it's a more upgradeable machine. If you're looking to get something faster, I'd pass over the G3 machines at this point. Anything with a G3 that is not upgradeable is going to be left behind when Leopard is released.

nothing wrong with a G3 they are stil fine machines i would not pay too much for one because right now they are the lowest of the low the oldest that are supported by os X

but i stil have one in my ibook G3

I have no intention of upgrading to Leopard on these machines, ever. As apps become Leopard-only, i'll stop using them.

Maybe i'll purchase a new machine with Leopard later, but for now just nothing can beat the form factor of the iMac G3. Having some issues sourcing a 600mhz G3 though.

i might move to leopard but then again all my apps are ppc only the further we go the less likley they wil run on intel hardware anyway

so i wont bother for a good long time

If i may ask, why aren't you going to Lepoard, apart from the cost of it?

ever heard of the if it aint broke dont fix it saying ?

why bother going to leopard if al it wants is just more hd space more ram better macintosh

tiger runs fine under my imac G5 why should i go to leopard ?

Mostly because:

1. I see no need to upgrade

2. I have no money to upgrade

3. I have no money to upgrade the machine it will run on

4. I don't care enough about I.T. anymore to actually put in the effort to get the money to upgrade the machine it will run on

;)

I'd maybe use it later on... but my upgrade scheme is a little off. Like, I

bought Panther after Tiger came out. I bought Tiger this year with Leopard

just around the corner, etc.

I don't mean to sound angered by Leopard only apps, it's just that as they become Leopard only, my only choice will be to stop using the application or using an older version.

I'm probably thinking different because i'm still on Jaguar (10.2. 8) , but i personally intend to get Lepoard soon after it comes out, when i get my nice new MacBook. :) (thats why i'm waiting till October to get it, even though i'll have the money in Sept)

I'm not upgrading instantly either. I want to upgrade my RAM to 1 Gig first, and then get it. But, All my christmas money, and any other money I get from here on out is going toward a new LoBo for "my" macbook.

you know for the price of that part alone you are better of selling the junked macbook for parts and then start saving for a new 1300 macbook

Considering that it sounds like the machine was a "lemon" from the amount of times it went back to Apple under warranty, and the early MacBooks are well-known to be rubbish, it would seem to make sense to sell it (it might get quite a good price) and get a new MacBook (if that's what you want), unless you can find one with a trashed screen for very cheap and are confident in piecing the two together into a working one.

I'm thinking.... Flower Power iMac G3 case & monitor, with dual Xeon 5365s inside.

Who's with me?

Dana

Could make an excellent case mod, and it's very possible with the right time and effort. Maybe start a little lighter... a Mac Mini at the centre of it all. Dual Xeons if it works.

Yick. Flower Power? I'd like a Athlon 64 x2 iMac with 1600x1200 screen and a 256mb vid card. That would just be awesome. Slate or whatever they called the grey one, indigo, or blueberry, or orange would be good colors.

No, it wouldn't be smart just to save for a new MB because The LoBo is about 300 dollars, and a new MB is $800 more. If I had a job, and a need for a C2D and iLife '08 then I'd get it, however I'd rather just keep this, and save my pennies for a LoBo

I don't think I'd trust the machine though, from what you said about how many times things have gone wrong on it before it sounds like one of those ones that was just never right and something else will go wrong on it. One reason why I decided to cut my losses and sell my Acer and get a new PC rather than paying several hundred to get it repaired was that I wouldn't have trusted it again after two things had gone wrong with it in the last 6 months.

Honestly everything has been replaced on it. Case plastics, PSU, Screen, Battery charging logic. And the C2D LoBos go for as much as a 1.83 CD, I might even get a C2D too.
