ADC Studio Display in OS 9

I got my hands on an ADC 17" Studio Display and it's super awesome...in Tiger. As long as I'm running OS X, I can change resolutions since games really run better at non-native, lower res. It even automatically letterboxes 4:3 resolutions on the 5:4 panel.

On OS 9, however, I can only pick the native resolution of 1280x1024. For whatever reason it refuses to let me scale the resolution down. I grabbed SwitchRes from the Mac Garden and I can't get it to even try other resolutions when I enter the values and hit the Test button on the Wizard page.

This cube has a 1 GHz Sonnet Encore/ST, an upgraded VRM that I got from Artmix, and a Radeon 7500 inside. I have not put the stock Rage 128 Pro back in it because honestly I don't want to use it.

Mac OS 9.0.4 was installed from original Cube CD, then upgraded using Apple's installers to 9.2.2. The graphics card is using the Radeon 9000 driver from the CD image available on the Mac Garden. They're the only drivers I've been able to find. If there are Radeon 7500 drivers, I can uninstall all the ATI extensions and control panels and try those instead.

Any advice from the collective?

What does the Radeon 7500 look like in Open Firmware? Mac OS 9 System Profiler? OS X?
Run AllRez in OS X to capture some info about the GPU and display.

Just to check... is this the 17" LCD or CRT Studio Display?

Have you tried installing Apple Displays software 1.8.1 or later? I can't remember what versions came with which versions of Mac OS 9, but the installer should tell you if it's not needed.

Oh I didn’t know there was a displays software. I’ll try it.

For fun I threw the Rage 128 Pro back in. I have several resolutions including 640x480 and 1024x768.

With the Radeon I did try a bunch of driver revisions, starting with January 2002 and ending in January 2005, and none of them had anything other than native res.

But I’ll try the display software and see what happens.

I got version 1.8.1 and 2.2.2 from Macintosh Repository. 1.8.1 was not needed on 9.2.2, but 2.2.2 installed. No change with the Radeon 7500.

I'm guessing there's something the driver is missing for scaled resolutions, since the display itself isn't doing the scaling.

It did install updated Nvidia drivers. Extensions manager says version 3.0 of all the GeForce extensions got installed by Apple Displays Software. Maybe that means a GeForce 2MX would work. I have a 4MX but it doesn't seem like it'll fit since it's wider than the Radeon 7500 and would interfere with the VRM. I know it's a slower card, but it's also a 60 Hz display so super high frame rates in the games I want to play wouldn't exactly matter much.
