5300 One out, One in

Galgot gave me a Powerbook 5300 as a trade.

As i said to him, already have one, but the 5300 has always been special to me...

Anyway, the Pbook was really fine outside, and gone through a new casing (AA sticker) no problem in the PSU connector area and no hinges trouble (so far)

The screen has one issue (lines in the bottom area, and a tendency to go dark after a few minutes) no big deal as i have a spare one, my first 5300 became a mess last year  (battery fluid all over the casing, plastic broken, hinges gone)





Time for a few swaps :

I get my HD back, some memory and removed the Sanyo screen and bolted the Sharp one (i removed both screens as the casing was broken in the hinges area, using the good casing with he good screen)

First i made a test to be sure both were plug and play:



Then put back everything together :



You cannot win all the time, but is so good when it works  :beige:

Btw, have seen some few 5300c (active matrix screen) , but still a bit expensive...

I'm glad to see a 5300 up and running. It is my favorite of all the powerbooks.

To save on weight, power and battery stress, and have a long life - I'd advise you get a couple 4GB CF Cards, 1 CF to PCMCIA adapter and 1 CF to laptop IDE Adapter and use the CF as a hard drive; the CF in the PCMCIA Adapter can be used a a back up drive.

I know this is a 1400, but the 5300 sets up the same way:

I have got a copy of the system in a CF card, and from time to time i managed to boot the 5300 from a PCMCIA adapter (not quicker but silent) and to save weight i removed the leaking batteries from their casing when i collected the first 5300 (the final result are the two pictures above) the empty case keeping the design of the PWB.

At some point Apple did the same IIRC.

I don't need a working battery anyway.

Apple(?) built a storage case for two PC Cards as a weight saving device in the battery case form factor. My favorite replacement "battery" is my currently DOA power adapter (Linde?) in the battery form factor. Worked internally or externally.

ISTR Apple doing the same for one (or more?) of the dual battery G3 PowerBooks?

I was excited when I got my 5300ce, except somebody had swapped in a regular 640x480 LCD from a 5300c :-/

Oh, well. It's still a fine example (or, at least it was last I looked... I should go and check the battery, as I don't think I removed it (gasp!) )

Hey! Found the thread with some pictures of my 5300ce goodies posted before I was convinced to upload pics locally for "safekeeping!" :

Supre5300ce™ Project went on hold when the PSU Module went teats up. I'm leaning toward transplanting the 180MHz Proc into a Duo again  .  .  .

.  .  .  some day, if and when. :lol:

Hey Bilbit, I don't know what's available in France or what you like to use but I would bathe the corroded plastic in Scrubbing Bubbles (or again the French analog).  In a few hours the corrosion will more or less be gone (generally (if you bathe it) without any real scrubbing).

Thanks, if the plastic was still in good nick i will have had a try, but it was too far gone to even think about it. I am keeping the main parts, rest has been tossed.
