512k macintosh with 128k serial #

Pretty common upgrade. Usually the rear bucket is original to the front. So under the 512k FCC label on back should be the original. Makes it pretty easy to downgrade to original-like condition by finding a board and rear emblem. Has the floppy drive been upgraded as well? With any luck, it still has the 400k but I see more 128ks becoming 512ke than anything.

It's either a 128k that had the 512k treatment at one time in its life or a 512k with a replacement bezel.

You should check the dates on your chassis/floppy drive. There were two 400k floppy drives made for Apple by Sony in 1984/1985:

The Sony OA-D34V-02 disk drive was used in early 128k Macs. The later "improved" version, the OA-D34V-22, can be found in both 128k/512k Macs.

If a 128k had Version A ROMs (like mine), it couldn't use the later drive. But you could use the early Sony OA-D34V-02 on a 512k Mac.

The serial number indicates an early 1984 128k Mac (9th week of 1984), so the drive inside your Mac should be a Sony OA-D34V-02. If it is then you have a 128k that has been upgraded to a 512k.

If it's a Sony OA-D34V-22, then it probably started out in life as a proper 512k Mac and had its bezel swapped.

Well that person is wrong. FYI. Hell, they did not even had a 512k badge by week nine. Probably has the FCC label on back also saying its a 512k? Again, not by week 9....

I even bet that dent in the plastic was caused by careless removal of the original logo. I've seen it before. Some did not know it can be pushed out from the inside.
