512k Enchanced with all the fixins (incl. boxes!)

I'll make this first post brief 'cause I know all you nuts are just in it for the pictures.

Normally I'm not to interested in pre-SE macs, but when I was given an offer for a 512ke with a "boatload of stuff" (for free) it was kind of hard to turn down. Nah, it was impossible to turn down! In any case, it belonged to a friend of my dad's who bought it new way back when and used it as a regular workhorse until it was replaced somewhere down the line with whatever replaced it and then tossed back into its boxes to wait until today!

As of this writing I have not yet turned it on, but so far, this is what I have inventoried:

- The 512k Enhanced, serial F6403GUM0001E and manual

- Original (presumably) keyboard and mouse (including that ridiculous RJ11 cable) Somewhat worn, but nothing terrible, a bit of cleaning would be fine.

- ImageWriter II, with manual and power cable (and a plastic cover)

- Few hundred sheets of tractorfeed, silverfish free

- Two boxes of floppies, looks like system disks and some games and software, haven't gone through it all

- Few manuals and books about Macs in general and Microsoft Works

- Kensington system saver in the box, with a cover

- Peculiar little mouse caddy stickied to the side of the mac, Kensington branded

- Two of those yellow dummy floppy disks

- An external 800k drive, also with the manual and cover

- Two boxes of 3M computer cleaning stuff? I dunno I haven't looked.

So, as I said I've never had a pre-SE mac before, so this will be quite an adventure, and I'll be spending more time than usual in the compact mac forums. Similarly, I have not yet fired it up as I knew you guys would be wanting a baseline report as soon as possible.

In case you missed the link at the top, here's another link to the pictures, which will be updated as I go along.

Quit update time: it works beautifully, I just booted the guided tour floppy and am having waaay too much fun! Why can't new computers be this awesome!?

Thanks!

Another update - The imagewriter works grandly, completes self test and loads tractorfeed happily. Not surprisingly, both ribbons are mostly dried up, so tomorrow morning ima hit up office depot and get a new one.

According to the box, it (The Macintosh Support Package) originally included the following:

- Flip 'n' File /Micro 10 Diskette Storage Box

- 3M Clean 'n' Safe screen cleaner

- 3M Clean 'n' Safe platen cleaner

- 3M Post-it note pad

- Diskwriter two-ended computer pen

- Some floppy disk offers

Pretty cool. I have everything but the postit notes and pen here!

An issue has come up, though - the external drive won't inject disks. I can push them in most of the way, but about 2mm still stick out. Ideas?

Well I'm a genius. Putting one of my spare SE 800k drives in the case works like a charm. I think the original drive is just gunked up, it doesn't look physically damaged and is slowly starting to work free.

That is amazing.

especially to me in Australia, we just simply don't get hauls like that.

those boxes are in brilliant nick too.

hang on to all that original packaging. I for one am very jealous.

Amazing! I'm not much of a pre-SE guy either, but I recognize a beautiful find when I see one. The boxes look like they're in remarkably good condition. Better condition than my Mac Pro box, even (thanks, FedEx). :)

info on your mac from the early mac serial number decoder site:

Your Macintosh 512e (M0001E), with serial number F6403GUM0001E, was the 4040th manufactured during the 40th week of 1986 in Fremont, CA.
