Sigh. I once had a PowerBook 100. Bought it for ≈£320 in spring/summer 1996. Loved it. I had an external FD for it. The 40MB HD did start to die after a few years, but I was able to repartition it as a 29MB drive.

powerbook 💻 2400c tip of the week 🤓
during startup, just after the "welcome to mac" screen… the powerbook will attempt to initialize the pc card cage, and eject any inserted cards.
if this fails for whatever reason, the computer will instantly shut down.

if the mechanism or circuitry is iffy (in particular, the eject/sense mechanism is a bit fragile)... it can look like something more serious is wrong.

also... never insert a memory card in the upper slot and a wlan card in the lower slot... and then eject the memory card.

Classic PowerBook 2400c quirk 💻 — right after “Welcome to Macintosh” 🍏, it tries to initialize the PC Card cage. If that fails, it instantly shuts down ⚡. Try booting with empty slots, cleaning contacts ✨, or reseating/disconnecting the cage. Pure mid-’90s Apple charm 😅.

To be clear, I was doing my own hand-crafted take on AI.
after much messing about I mostly succeeded in performing a polarizer replacement on this 2400c panel

the soap method @jmacz mentioned was indispensable... highly advise removing the backlight first though...not perfect, but sure beats a crackled smelly vinegar panel

certified powerbook duo moment. all those big caps were leaking their guts all over the board. clearly someone turned it on without recapping...

Ouch! At least there's a bit of the pads left. Hope it didn't eat any of the traces.

Thankfully a lot of those capacitors are in parallel with each other, so there are options for connecting to different pads, or just using bigger capacitors

280c display capacitors if anyone is curious. so many stupid little cans.

Measurements - height and width of each cap might be good for next time - can be useful for caps with tigher physical tolerances such as in display assemblies.

I always just get the smallest caps that I can when recapping LCDs in order to give myself the most room to work. I don't think it would even be possible for me to solder in caps at the original dimensions that they used.

check your PowerBook Duo trackballz... earlier revs seem have a radial lytic cap that leaks

Updating my Duo cap reference right now - would it be ok if I used your photo on MacDat? Would credit you of course.

disassembled a 2400c trackpad. yuck! crumbly foam! and some mystery stickyness. i suppose this explains why some 2400c have floppy trackbuttons
