• Updated 2023-07-12: Hello, Guest! Welcome back, and be sure to check out this follow-up post about our outage a week or so ago.

While doing some maintenance I found a treasure trove!

So I pulled out my four SEs that I've never given much attention to, in order to give them a thorough check up and remove all their PRAM batteries.

What should I find in two of them but some pretty powerful accelerator boards!

One had an Orion, from MacPEAK Systems - an 020 running at 20mhz with FPU. The other had a Total Systems Gemini Ultra, packing an 030 at 40mhz (also with FPU)! Both of them have all gold socketed chips. Rather delightful!

I'm just tracking down the software now so I can run diagnostics to find out more.

I've put up photos of both over on my Instagram account, which is here: https://www.instagram.com/hypertalking/

Suddenly all those compact Mac CPU upgrades pop up from everywhere.  :O

I suppose you already checked here for drivers: http://vintageapple.org/macdrivers/accel.shtml

Maybe you can report back if you are also having sound issues with any of those cards.

No matter which driver I tried yet but I can not get undistorted sound out of the Total Systems card.

With some drivers the sound will work in one application but will still be distorted in another one.

If you decide that you want to sell or trade for the 030, let me know I would love to have one for my restored SE FDHD that was once owned by Apple.  :beige:

Nice find!

Yeah I've got drivers for the Gemini - they were already installed.

The Orion card is a bit trickier but I've downloaded all the drivers. Not had time to try them.

The Gemini is working great - the SE shows it has 16mb RAM!! But only 8mb of logical RAM available to the system - the rest appears as a RAM disk on the desktop.

I've not noticed any sound issues - are there any applications in particular you'd like me to run to test for them?

I'll post what Apple Personal Diagnostics showed next... I was rather surprised...
