I saw this on eBay, and I'm not sure what this is. It's quite local to me, about 5 miles, but I have no intention of bidding. It it Apple A/UX? Maybe someone with more knowledge of apple boxes could explain?

It's an X11 environment for like System 7, it can be used to run graphical UNIX apps from another box, like a Sun system. The biggest advantage of that, of course, is that you can buy one Sun box with one cool X11-based app (or a custom-written app even) and have a bunch of Macs on the same ethernet network with the ability to use that app.

From memory, it was to run an X11 (or similar) protocol within the MacOS environment.

This would then allow a Mac to operate as a thin-net client (well strictly speaking it was the 'server' end) in a network where Unix servers delivered applications via the X11 protocol.
