Unsupported OS 9 eMac G4: switching between OS 9 and X is a disaster

Hi everybody!

Yesterday I installed Mac OS 9.2.2 on my “Unsupported” eMac G4 (1 GhZ, 40 GB, 1 GB, ATI 7500) with the MacOS9Lives disc on the second partition of my hard disk and 10.4.11 on the first partition.

OS 9.2.2 works like a charm on my eMac G4 and I really want to keep it with 10.4.11, I created two separated partitions to switch the OS in the Open Firmware’s boot manager and here’s the trouble: it’s completely buggy and it doesn’t works so well with the wireless keyboard and mouse I have on the eMac, it only works with the original Pro Mouse that I use on my Quicksilver, but also with it sometimes the boot manager works like s**t.

So, everything is fine, but the OS switching is a disaster, OS 9 sees OS 10.4.11 in the Startup Disk utility, but OS X 10.4.11 doesn’t see OS 9 in the control panel because my eMac G4 doesn’t natively support OS 9.

Does anyone have a solution to see OS 9 as startup folder on OS 10.4.11 or something to switch from OS 10.4.11 to OS 9 without passing through the boot manager? I’m running crazy. Thank you

Did you post this question in the OS9Lives forums?    I hope you will share any answers/solutions you get with us here, but I think the readers there are more likely to address your problem, than the readers here, although there is a fair amount of overlap.

Yep, I posted the issue in OS9Lives' Facebook group but no luck, another person had my same problem and frustration but without solution

Not the Facebook group.   The forum.   Unless I am horribly misremembering there is a forum similar to this one attached to OS9Lives where much discussion about issues similar to your has taken place.

SOLVED

So, a user into MacOS9Lives' Facebook group pasted me a terminal line:

/usr/sbin/bless --folder9 "Volumes/YOURVOLUME/YOUROS9SYSTEMFOLDER" -saveX --use9 --setOF

/usr/sbin/bless --folder9 "Volumes/YOURVOLUME/YOUROS9SYSTEMFOLDER" -saveX --use9 --setOF; /sbin/reboot

^------- If you want to reboot your Macintosh after executing the script

I simply pasted the first line to a text file and gave the text file to the terminal, the eMac successfully rebooted into OS 9.2.2

1) Go to Terminal

2) type "sudo nano goto9"

3) past the first or the second line

4) CTRL + X, then save with Y and Enter

5) type "sudo chmod +x goto9"

6) type "sudo ./goto9"

^----- Every time you'll need to go to OS 9 open the terminal and only write this line

CORRECTION

/Volumes/YOURVOLUME/YOUROS9SYSTEMFOLDER

I forgot the / before Volumes
