System 7.6.1 StuffIt Issues

For many .sit files on my System 7.6.1 machine, I get

The application "unknown" has unexpectedly quit, because an error of type 3 occured.

I get this for almost every .sit that I've tried. Haven't found any info online that's been much help.

Anyone know how I can resolve this?

I think that is the error I often get when I try to open a Stuffit 5 file on a computer that can only handle Stuffit 3 or 4. I haven't taken the time to totally chase down what the requirements of Stuffit 5 are, I usually just move those files over to my OS9 machine and unstuff them there. Try installing Stuffit 5. If your computer says it can't install Stuffit 5, see if you can move the files to a computer with a higher level OS.

What version of StuffIt or StuffIt Expander are you using?

I am using StuffIt Expander 5.5 already.

It was an issue with the OS install somehow. A fresh install with the Umax SuperMac S900 restore disk + a StuffIt Deluxe 5.5 install has yielded much better results.

You may have Stuffit Expander 5.5, but was it installed via installer or just dragged in? I'd check the version of your Stuffit Engine extension, that may be older.
