Per the question "why not just upgrade the MB" for some reason my brain is requiring that I upgrade the original MB so that I'm using a "pure" LC. Why? I don't know. Kind of like I don't know why I now have a closet full of Mac stuff :)

I am in the market for any and all of the LC PDS accelerators - will post in Trading Post too - thanks for info so far!

Out of curiosity, why not just get a 475/605 board?
You could just as easily say "why not just buy a modern computer?"

Any modern machine would run circles around any reasonable upgrade you could do to an LC, but when collecting something for the nostalgic aspect, there's something to be said for keeping things original or upgrading using period parts.

Car guys do this too. There's a healthy market for vintage performance upgrade parts, even though plenty of modern and arguably superior parts can be had. Sometimes it's just fun to do something the old way, or acquire the toys and parts you lusted after but couldn't afford back in the day.

Ugh. SU carbs.
inorite? Probably could adapt LH 2.2 to one pretty easily...

Re: the stock LC vs LC475: Pick up a 475 board now and use until the Speedster040 card is sourced. Then, revert the machine to the stock 020 LC motherboard and pop the accelerator in place.

I was thinking specifically of ways to get a 68040 in an LC form factor. This can be accomplished a couple ways, and I was wondering why the OP wanted to do it the need-hard-to-find-parts way. I totally understand wanting to go with the upgraded II board instead. Sometimes the means are more fun than the ends - especially in an antiques hobby like this one.

People used to laugh when I'd splash gasoline on the wire mesh "air filters" on my TR-3. Sometimes the SUs needed a little pick me up to get things running. :)

The LC475 board is a cheap upgrade and you can still add an Ethernet card since you have the PDS slot unused. I did that to one of my LC3's, heatsink barely clears the cover.

The presto Plus is a nice upgrade (Ethernet, 68040, 32MB built in RAM) but they are hard to find anymore and will cost much more then any other option. Doesn't hurt to keep looking, sooner or later you might find one. I have a bunch of stuff I never figured I would ever find cheap, but they took years to get.

Yeah, when I wanted an '040 LC, I found a Performa 475, swapped the floppy drive and the hard drive over from the LC, then put the case lid on. Computer was recognized as an LC475 by System 7.1 with the correct enabler installed.

Absolutely agreed, I can usually turn something like this up by searching the great GOOG over the past 3 years and finding somebody that's sitting on one, offered one for sale, talked about one and willing to sell etc. But striking out so far. Any LC upgrade in fact!

And then for you Uni:

Getting there, not quite to ceiling yet :) . And boards on the way to you Monday for CAPS, I will share the full 840av story when I get them all back together, appreciate all the help.
