Some software I have, are any of these rare?

I found some software, a lot of it still in the original shrink-wrapped packaging, in storage. Are any of these rare and should be archived somehow?

AppleShare File server with Apple II setup disk. Used, no box.

That's all in those storage boxes.

TOPS is absolutely rare. I believe @Dog Cow was trying to get TOPS sharing to work between two Macs, but couldn't with only a single serial.

The rest, I would strongly recommend preserving in some manner. How exactly, I will leave those suggestions to the experts.  :)

I think archive.org has OS/2 Warp fairly well covered. Warp 3 can be fun, though given the choice I'd much rather put Win95 OSR 2 on a vintage IBM compatible.

The 3D home and AppleTalk Internet Router id love to play with if archived. General rule: if you’ve got original disks, back it up. Why not?

I have specific interest in PowerShare and perhaps Web Server construction kit, both for archival/perusal on both Internet Archive and http://vtools.68kmla.org, but because server, networking, and collaboration tools like those are personal interests of mine.

Are you looking to just send these to someone or are you assessing value for ebay or are you trying to split the difference?

I agree with above, these should definitely be archived if we aren't certain that something is archived, or, that it is archived well.

In this lot, Acrobat is likely the best example. I'm confident there are lots of copies out there. But, are any of them untouched copies of the install media? Are any of them in your particular localization? (It sounds/looks like you're in the US but if you weren't, then this would be a more important question.)

I am in the U.S.  (Detroit). I'm just going through boxes at the moment. My eventual intention is to sell off everything that is in storage. Networks were my hobby back in the 1990's and I picked up a ton of stuff from schools and businesses that were dropping Apple and switching to window. I'm just showing in this thread what I have left as I find it. If that is OK.

But, some things like the Token Ring connector I can't ever use as I don't have a token ring network so I'd sell it with a good offer right now, though I'll probably put it on eBay with the EtherGate's that I have. Same with the TOPS stuff. I have about a dozen Mac SE/30's that are working and I'd like to keep a couple of them and will need some network software but will sell most of them eventually. I also found a GatorBox, and maybe two of them. I have to work my way back there to know for sure.

I actually just found this site by accident when I was searching for "Shiva EtherGate" on Google to do some research before putting my EtherGates up for auction and found a soul who needed some software that I had.  I've been looking through the site and found this Conquests forum so I thought I'd put pictures up of what I'm finding and seeing if there is anything rare that is "lost" so I could try to archive it before I decide to use or sell.

I found another box with some Apple stuff too but most of what I have is PC related or non-Mac network hardware.

Here is what I took out of that box

Central Point Software Mac Tools Deluxe. Open box (box is trash though, disks are good and so is manual pictured).

Neon LANsurveyor. No box, this is also on one of the SE/30's hard drives I have along with Internet Router.

Original OS X  (open box, the bar code is missing)

IMG-0993.jpg.fbb7ae86300acdd5a68f40bf048413ae.jpg

OSX Jaguar. Open Box, bar code is missing.

I have a couple of VHS tapes that I'll convert to .mp4 with my Honestech.

The Q-Drive Care and Feeding.  I have the drive somewhere too. Probably in my basement. I'll see if I can find that.

The System 6 video from Q-LABS. I think this is Apple IIGS system 6 and not Mac.

II Alive Apple II review. I think this was also Q-labs. They were a couple of towns over from me here in Michigan. Quality Computers.

It's not against the rules, but I'll admit, I personally find it distasteful to come in to ask what a vintage community what ebay values for things will be so you can turn around and sell it, especially in the same breath as asking if anything is "rare" - unless your intention by:

and should be archived somehow?
is to yourself do the archiving and send the files to us somehow, or send things that are deemed as in need of being archived, to someone who can do it, such as, just off the top of my head, @nglevin @LaPorta @pcamen @Dog Cow @Alex or myself. (There are others who should be willing and able.)

My apologies if I've misinterpreted intention.

????? I just went back and looked at what I posted and it wasn't my intention to ask for eBay values, in fact I didn't ask for any values at all. I may or may not sell this stuff its undetermined yet, except for the Token Ring card with its software and the TOPS stuff which I know is going to be sold because I can't use any of it. I already have a bunch of Shiva EtherGate's that I'm preparing for eBay so they will probably be listed with them. I hope that clears it up for you. Quite frankly I never knew this forum existed before my Google search for information on the EtherGates.  I only posted all this here because the forum title is "Conquests" and the subtitle is "Discuss your latest vintage Mac finds!"

If I'm doing something wrong or posting in the wrong forum please let me know. I don't want to upset the community.  I did find all of this vintage Mac stuff in storage so I consider it a latest vintage Mac find because I forgot I had it.

Anyway, when I came here a couple of days ago from Google someone suggested that the Shiva Internet Administrator software I have a dozen copies of was thought to be lost and it should be uploaded to a pirate site so it wouldn't be lost again. I thought I was helping a poor soul who was told it was gone. Same in this thread, if there is any software I have that is considered rare or thought to be lost I'd copy it before selling (if I decide to sell).   Unfortunately I can't give any of this stuff away, no matter how old and unloved it is. (I'm serious, not being facetious).

I hope that helps.

Eric

p.s. I just learned that the TOPS software is going for a lot less than I can part with it on eBay.

Value with second hand software is funny. In the way that, you can see copies of old Adobe stuff such as the later iterations of the Creative Suite going for hundreds on brand recognition and acknowledged use, while the vast majority of software that has no mainstream recognition can sit forever at $9.99 regardless of how obscure it really is.

The other problem is, with computers, they're not like vintage video games in that you can pop them in a set top box and, boom, it works or it doesn't. Anything involving networks is likely to fall into extreme obscurity, and that goes for most Mac stuff too. Classic, PPC OS X, perhaps anything that shipped in a box at this point in time.

We do have a Trading Post for actual trades, if the intent was selling to this community. Admittedly it's probably in better faith to do price assessment on your own if that was what you ultimately wanted to do. As your potential buyers we might not be the best judges of that.  :)

My vote is still to preserve it before the disks decay, if they haven't started to yet. Respectfully, that's up to you, whether it's for a private collection or a place like the Internet Archive.

Hi Eric,

I can't speak about rare they are (I have some of them myself) but they becoming rarer with time. Plastic only lasts so long before it warps. None of this software packages were envisioned to be in use in 30 years' time.

My strong recommendation is to archive them on the Macintosh Garden, archive.org or some other place open to all.

Please scan what you can.

Here is the guide from the Macintosh Garden on archiving old software: http://macintoshgarden.org/a-beginners-guide-uploading-stuff-macintosh-garden.

My apologies. I had thought I removed that before posting.

It was a presumption based on the other thread where you had talked about not wanting to split the software (which needed to be archived/preserved) from a device you have for eBay value purposes. I originally removed it (and, it must have been as part of an edit, which is my own oversight) because I didn't want it to sound, well, as accusatory as it did.

some other place open to all.
VTools accounts, long term, are going to be available to all. It takes me a day or two to do it but anybody can PM me for an account - though they take a couple days to build, because I have to go sit at the machine to do it.
