Setting startup disk on LC475

Hi,

I've partitioned the drive on my LC475 into 2 Mac and 1 Prodos partitions. The first Mac partition has 7.5.5 installed. The second Mac partition now has System 7.1 with Update 3 Installed. My problem is that I cant seem to get my Mac to startup from the partition with System 7.1 on it.

When I go to the "Startup Disk" control panel, both partitions are highlighted. I can deselect them both and choose the partition I want to boot from, but it doesnt stick.

Any ideas? Is there a way to force my Mac to startup from the second partition on boot up?

Cheers,

Hold down Command-Shift-Option-Delete.

On another thought - are you sure that the System 7.1 folder has the right enabler? In order to boot an LC475, a System 7.1 installation needs the System Enabler 065.

Thanks for the tips LCGuy, but unfortunately no luck. I believe my install has all the right bits (enabler and all), but I'm still not able to boot from it. The ommand-Shift-Option-Delete combo showed me a flashing question mark (which is more than I normally get).

Perhaps its because these partitions are on the same physical disk - should I be able to choose which partition I want to boot from when they are both on the same disk?

Perhaps not :( Might be time to look for an external SCSI drive... doh

Cheers,

The classic Startup Disk cp might not be the appropriate tool for multiple systems on a multi-partitioned harddisk drive.

My suggestion is HDT (this post contains a copy from How to prepare dual boot system?). HDT permits to make your choice at boot time (nearly as good as the trick with the depressed option key on recent Macs).

Have the FWB Harddisk Toolkit software (HDT). I managed to use it to set up a PB 180 with several partitions on the internal harddisk drive. Each partition (=volume) may contain one blessed system folder. Use HDT to configure which volume shall be the standard boot volume for a given SCSI ID (which is stored in the PRAM as a boot volume). You may force the Mac to boot into any bootable partition at early startup by use of a key combo (it is like cmd-opt-shift in combination with the partition number). To get the details read the manual, please). The version of HDT I used was 2.0.1.
FWB Inc. seems not to exist any more, sadly. Is there any supply of the most recent HDT version available ? The version number stalled arround 5, I think.
