Goodwill or any thrift store will have a hundered of them for 2 bucks each, turn around when your done and donate it back
You need to be careful as they are generally very worn out and sometimes munch tapes. If they are worn you get bad quality, if it munches, you get ruined tapes. :(

The VCRs from Goodwill suck. I bought one for about $4 and used it only twice before it ate a tape (luckily, not an important one). I used it once more to record some of the analog stations shutting off and then it ate a part of that tape too. Suffice to say it went to the recycler after that.

Um, did you clean the heads?

I shouldn't have to clean the heads. If Goodwill had taken a few minutes to play a tape in the thing they probably would have seen it jam up, so they could throw it away instead of selling it.

Anyway, I have a nice Samsung DVD Recorder & VHS Recorder combo unit that I got as a cheap refurb unit, so no more GW VCRs for me.

Unfortunately most thrift shops don't test electrical goods - hence why they claim "This item has not been tested and is being sold suitable for parts only". Its easier for them to simply put it out on the shelf and slap a sticker on it claiming that than it is to plug it in and test it - and someone will still end up buying it for $30.

Im a techno type, with a masters in electronic engineering so maybe i think different (C apple) but the vibe i got from the forum here was "rip that joker apart and make it work"

seems like some gear lube and cleaning on a 2$ vcr wasn't that big of a deal

maybe I was wrong

Oh come on. It's a thrift shop, for flip's sake. What did you expect?

Do you throw your car away when it needs an oil change?
Yeah. I'm on my 6th Cobalt now. Pretty damn expensive.

I put the old cars in the dumpster (I work out. A LOT). No recycling or anything.

Not worth the time, for the little use that it got. I have a DVD Recorder/VHS Combo unit now which makes digitizing tapes a lot more convenient.

Now this is an odd find:
On offer is a VINTAGE COLLECTABLE - BRAND NEW Apple PowerBook {x00} Series Video Service Course as part of the Apple Service Training Courses. This box is new and factory sealed. It contains a VHS video cassette (likely NTSC format) and documentation covering the take apart and servicing of the PowerBook {x00}
I could really use these videos; what ever happened to the tapes? Who has them, and were they uploaded?

I have them, and a few more I picked up along the way. No, I haven't uploaded them yet.
