SE/30 64MB RAM Upgrade

Just bought 4x16MB SIMMs from OWC, whose SIMMs I understand to be compatible with the SE/30.  Filled bank A -- no RAM in bank B.  Powered on and got chimes of death and vertical bars on the screen.  I had the board cleaned and recapped several months ago and all of the slots look pristine.

The repair SE/30 page shows this configuration (and only this configuration) as "No Good".  What's the deal?  Is this configuration bad for some reason?

I seem to remember that the banks may not be empty. This is the case with IIcx. Do you not have the original SIMMs?

Happened to me too. The se30 and other macs have specific ram configuration. In order to use only 4 slots of ram, I think you have to use bank B and leave bank A blank. Or you have to fill in bank B with other ram.

In my case the 64mb ram I got were too big and wouldn't fit in bank B they were a bit too tall the way the logic board goes in the case at an angle. I had to fill bank A with 64mb and bank B with with 4x1mb of ram, Which is even better got 68mb! =)

Thanks everyone! I opened it up last night and put 4 of the original 1MB SIMMs in Bank B and it started up immediately. My hope was to only use the new SIMMs since they are 60ns vs the 80ns originals, but I can always max it out at 128 later if I want.

I think the speed of the RAM on the SE/30 runs at 150ns, regardless of what is installed.

Treat yourself to 4 more SIMMs for Christmas. :)
