Scored an SE FDHD, Mac Plus, 40SC, and a ton of RAM for free!

I had one of my blog readers throw me an email saying he had a few vintage Macs that I could have for free. I offered to pay postage, but he wouldn't hear of it! Amazing the generosity of people.

I was thrilled to see that not only is it an SE, but an SE FDHD. I've been dying for another Fat Mac that can read 1.44s since my Classic died a few years back. I've had my eye out for an SE/30, but eBay prices are insane. I was surprised to see that this machine had 8MB of RAM. I looked at the logicboard and lo and behold, it's an SE/30 board!

The hard drive is dead, but it boots just fine from floppies as well as an external SCSI drive.

The Mac Plus too is an oddity. It was apparent as soon as I took off the cover. What's with the fan and extra power supply?

I pulled the board out, and what do you know, it's been upgraded to a 68030!

There looks like there's a ton of RAM on this board, but the system only reports 4MB. The floppy drive is dead, but again, boots just fine with an external.

He also gave me a 40SC, but the hard drive is dead.

Along with the 50-60 RAM sticks he gave me, he threw in 4 of these RAM expanders. I can't seem to find anything about them online. Does anyone know what machine they go in? They don't look like they'll fit in any of these machines the way the RAM slots are oriented.

Nevermind, I found it. Cool! The blog doesn't seem to allow for comments, but on your "800K Floppy Drive Repair Fail…" post, I think those eject motors require 12 volts, not 5 volts.

I have the exact same accelerator setup in my Plus, I think it was part of the Hyperdrive kit. I noticed your still has its power supply, etc. Mine was gone.

But the accelerator remained.

Problem is, we need the drivers. For one, the OS only sees the card as a 68020 with NO FPU. And, it doesnt see the RAM.

Plus its unstable on shutdown or restart it hangs the machine.

Didn't matter, swapping the motors didn't do anything. It's OK to test a 12V motor with 5V to see if it works. It's not OK to test a 5V motor with 12.

That probably explains why I only see 4MB.

Can you upgrade the SE ? (The SE/30 LB can accept more than 8 Mb with the proper soft )
Haven't tried to go past 8MB yet. I think all my sticks are 1MB sticks. The 8MB in this machine is still twice that of my other SEs, so it's still a welcomed upgrade.
