resurrecting a CC - bus error?

I'm booting my "Mystic" CC from OS 7.6 CD after swapping in a different HD (the old one failed quite some time ago and I just haven't gotten back to it til now), and I get

Code:
Sorry, a system error occurred.
bus error
To temporarily turn off extensions, restart and hold down the shift key.
What kind of problem is this indicating? Is it something that can be fixed? Is it possible that my replacement HD is just bad too?

To me, this sounds like a corrupted file extension, missing enabler, missing file extension or PDS card issue. When you restart your CC with the Extensions turned off, what happens?

Being a "Mystic" CC means it has a LC575 motherboard correct?

The only things I can think of would be a conflict between the HD and CD Drive, or the CD is scratched. You could try booting without any HD and see if it works or boot from a different disc.

Hope this helps. ;)

Edit: I found this, maybe there's something useful there. :D

1. Did your Mystic have the video hack done to it or the ResEdit hack?

2. Will it boot from the (free) 7.5 disk utilities floppy?

My experience of the Mystic CC is that System software installation on it is generally a painful fiddle, so I would not give up on the replacement HD just yet.... However, if the machine previously ran with the stock video resolution of a CC, then you will need a stock CC logic board to get any further, as far as I know.

You're right; I'd forgotten about that. I'll probably need to reinstall using the original mobo before swapping in the 575 one.

Pop in a PRAM battery and leave it plugged in for a day or so. Hopefully it will then boot up. Not sure why CCs do this (though PRAM problems are the most obvious of the possibilities) but it is a reasonably common experience.

The 7.6 CD crashing at boot is normal on systems with stock analog boards.

It's a lot easier to get MacOS 7.1 working under this configuration, as you only need to patch the System Enabler.
