well after fellow 68kmla member phreakinus or whatever you say it went into a rage and busted the screen on his icebook 500 and pounded the keyboard many of the keys fell off the ibook was in a sorry state so i had a dead ibook g4 with a good display the prices for another parts g4 on ebay are outragous iam not gonna get 100 bucks shoved in the butt for a crappy non booting ibook. so i took the g4 screen out and put the LDVS connector from the g3 which somehow surived into the ibook g4 scren then since the mic connector was different and i didn't want to route it i sniped it. also some other connect on the g4 screen was different but i didn't give a shit i shoved it into the ibook anyways :) i took the original 10 gig out and put in a 20 gig and i since preakinus busted the cd rom earlier i had to put one of thouse in the frame is cracked neear the battery and the whole thing looks like crap the screen bezel still says ibook g4. i guess i could put it on ebay and say its a ibookg4 and that i don't know what the speed is and i could get hella money its got 576megs of ram and a airport card that works:) i put tiger and its slow as hell my 466se with panther runs way better but my panther install discs whould make this kernal panic so i just put this in target disc mode to install tiger no crashes.

anyways check out http://torbar.net/lawl2

yeah my usb ports don't work on my ibook 500 is there something i might have left disconeccted that would cause them not to work, also if i plug in a mouse it lights up but wont detect it nor will it detect my flash drive, my superior clamshell ibook works with it so why doens't the icebook.

sounds like something came un soldered. Like the data path came apart since the ports are a separate part from the logic board. My iBook started making odd gurgly noises from the speakers so I just unplugged them. But for you this is different. It does sounds like that ports came off the logic board a bit. if you feel confident you can crack it open and take a peek.

Okay. From the title of your post, it looks like you are wanting help getting this iBook back together. So, I'll try to offer what I can.

First, it's not a G4 iBook. It's a G3 500Mhz dual USB - the first generation of white iBooks. I'm not sure why you would try to combine the two at all.

Now, you say "so i had a dead ibook g4 with a good display" - you mean you had this part in addition to the G3 iBook which you were given?

Then " i took the g4 screen out and put the LDVS connector from the g3 into the ibook g4 scre[e]n" - I'm not quite sure what you mean by this either. You took apart both displays and swapped the cable from one to the other? Was the LVDS cable connector different between the two iBooks? Generally, it is not recommended that you swap display between such a large generation gap. The displays aren't usually the same. However, since the display resolutions on all white iBooks are the same, perhaps it will be alright.

So then you proceed to ruin the internal microphone by cutting the connection instead of replacing it properly, and, when a connector was different "i didn't give a shit i shoved it into the ibook anyways " -- how do you expect to repair a computer properly with that attitude? Why even bother?

" i guess i could put it on ebay and say its a ibookg4 and that i don't know what the speed is and i could get hella money its got 576megs of ram and a airport card that works:) " -- Great idea! Let's lie and deceive another buyer and contribute to the dishonesty and scamming already present on eBay. If you're lucky the buyer will realize what you did and claim a Paypal dispute - and you'll be screwed out of your cash AND the iBook.

" i put tiger and its slow as hell " -- Well, you must have done something wrong - I have two iBook G3s (500MHz) running Tiger quite comfortably with 320MB and 384MB of RAM.

Perhaps if you would explain a little more clearly what problems you have with the iBook, what all you have done, and if you are even interested in making a decent Mac from the parts, we would be more likely to help. And, pictures of how the unit currently is might help as well.

wowz this guys got some killa wording, anyways its working good enough dispite the usb ports not working which is no biggy iam happy enough airport works yeah i guess tiger wouldn't be too slow for you if you like having memorys of using a mac LC with 7.5.3 iam sure you would say it runs great as well. anyways like i said my friend got really mad and distroyed the screen and stabed it serveral times with a knife so i just was lucky enought to comble this pile together and get a working system. i hate how the left palm rest gets really hot i think the icebooks are total POSes lucky i have a nice graphic SE 466 which does the job nicely and runs a whole lot better, probably cause its running panther.

Actually my iBook 500MHz gets hot on the left palmrest. The problem? Those rubber things that hold it in place were not there.

yeah i made sure i put the rubber things there when i had it apart and the hard drive should be mounted good. still i just don't feel like taking it apart, its a good junker laptop still runs itunes albiet with lots o spinning beachballs and firefox with more beachballs but it gets the job done.

You seriously have something wrong with your iBook. I have 320MB of ram and a 20GB 5400RPM drive that has 4GB left and I get no beachballs.

it has a 4200 rpm 20 gig, i don't know and i installed osx 10.4 using the target disk mode, i ran the installer on my G5 don't know it that would make a difference.

yeah iam just not sure i appreciate your help heavy metal its just a fluke i guess, iam on the clamshell now it just runs so much faster granted i have panther on this and i put a 60 gig 7200rpm drive in the clamshell but yeah i rarely get beach balls on it, i wanted to install panther on my icebook but it had a kernal panic everytime so i thought my disks were messed up that is why i did target disk mode on it to install tiger, using my tiger cd it would get to 22percent and stop it also did the same on my friends ibook 600 so i think my discs were messed up.

I'd love to help, but I cannot decipher your posts Devon.

I am not a grammar nazi but you to know what periods are and how to avoid run-on sentences right?

Again, would love to help but your posts hurt my brain.

Brain hurt = not good.

I know one thing the clamshell has to its advantage - that 60GB 7200RPM drive. That makes a huge difference in VM times and the like. I don't have Xbench or anything like that to test my machines with, so I can't provide numbers.

Another thing - does the clamshell SE have a video chipset that is accelerated under Panther? I know the early clams' video isn't, which is a big area in which the IceBooks win out.
