. . . possibility for a liberation (of the memory limit) for a 4/4 tone MemCheck error Chimes of xx(

I just took shots of this MoBo for other topics, but I may as well ask for opinions on fixing/modding this MoBo that bit the big one sometime between '04 and '09.

It looks to me as if Apple used the EvilCapCans in lieu of multiple bypass cap protection for major ASICS and RAM/VRAM/ROM banks. If so, might a bad bypass cap be causing the problem? I'll have to pull out the continuity tester to . . . test . . . this hypothesis. Can anyone save me that trouble? [;)] ]'>

plans:

1 - recap Bank A

2 - full recap

3 - replace RAM ICs

4 - skip 3 . . . [}:)] ]'> . . . hack in more memory: another fuglySIMMhack, a multiple banked ROM SIMM hack or a Two SIMM reversed SIMM Saver hack?

I'm assuming that just disabling Bank A is not going to help reduce the number or tone of the chimes. :-/

Advice, comments, information about BankHacking? :?:

What Sad Mac is it doing? I recapped my Performa 475 and it got rid of the Sad Macs (I did not have upgraded RAM). Also, if you're hacking that logic board, make it a removable hack!

When you recapped your P475 Machine, What caps did you use?

Where did you get them from? How much in (USD) did it end up costing?

I used the same can-style caps as the ones originally on the logic board. I got them from RS electronics (I'm in the UK), and it cost me about £5 (I don't know what that is in dollars).

So what I'm saying is, heat up your iron and recap the bad boy, man, I must warn you,

once you re-cap one, you will then want to re-cap them all :)

Thanks mcd, you're da man! It'll be nice to have a spare, so I can try hacking this one after I play around with replacing one cap at a time

I really am curious if one bad cap can cause a memory failure death chimes, first time, every time?

It will also be interesting to see if it turns out to be memory after they've all been replaced.

Noodling out the Bank and Row address selects for this bad boy has always been on the list of projects.

Correctly done patch wire rerouting of the necessary lines to a two SIMM adapter board might be all the makeover necessary to clean up the act of the old EVIL Memory Hack linked to by Danamania here and over on 'fritter. It involved ribbon cable adaptation and involved the most awful signal degradation and internal RFI conceivable. Dr. Bob immediately pronounced it "the most evil thing he'd ever seen' or something to that effect.

I'll have to search it in both archives to see if that page is still up! }:)

< . . . takes evil KVM shortcut to QS'02's Sherlock 2 and SCORES!!!! >

For some reason or other, I've got an iCab document titled: LC475 memory slot addition. I need to get it to someone with an unexpired version of iCab that's up and running. Opening it up to find out if the original page is still up, wayback dipping it or massaging it into a new format and hosting it for this thread, whatever is easiest, would be cool . . .

. . . if not a bit evil, which would make it very

PM me for a realmail attachment. }:)

Sorry jt, I think there was a misunderstanding. I just picked up an LC475 for uniserver and recapped the board for him. It was nasty. If you've got another, I don't mind redoing it for you. Tell me where to get a proper ROM SIMM slot and I'll put one of those in for you too.

NoPro, mmcd, I have two pair, 605s over 475s, so I've got three working MicroQuadra MoBos at last count. One already has the ROM SIMM Slot, so I'll stay put. However, a C.A.R.E. package of the requisite Capacitors, or a pair of sets, would be awesome though.

A gift covering all costs and shipping will wing its way to Oregon with the mere mention of a PayPal Addy. ;)

I need to get started on this myself, before something finally springs a leak around here. :-/

oP is the 68kMLA's Radar O'Reilly of ROM SIMM slottage scroun . . . erm . . . procurement.

How about it old bird, feel like making a run at finding a few more SIMM Connectors for the gang? I could use several myself! :approve:
