Quadra 800-More Failure

Well, in my Quadra 800, my rasterops card goes loose in its socket if touched at all by the monitor wire. Thus a crash and death chimes on boot. So I have to:

Open The Hellish Case

Push on Card

Seal

Reconnect

(Repeat)

The little clips above the slot are useless, and the card is so long and thick that it sags. Must be designed for flat macs not tower macs.

Now it death chimes with nothing hooked up. Again.

Sometimes collecting these old things just isnt worth the hassle when they all break. First the IIci and now this.

And I put it out of the case. Bongs as normal.

Put in case...death chimes.

Check the pins in the nubus card socket to see if any got bent.

None. And now it is working.

One of my more edgy macs. It hates being tampered with in the smallest ways.

I prefer edge connectors compared with the 96 way connectors used by NuBUS.

ISA, EISA, PCI, S-100, MultiBUS all used edge connectors.

PCMCIA/PC-Card/Cardbus, another type of card I hate due to experience, is another that has pin connectors.

What the hell? No.

If the problem is the card becoming unseated, would it be possible to glue a small rubber block to the case lid, such that when it's closed it presses down (gently) on the Nubus card/s keeping it/them seated?

If the Mac is crashing at boot with the logic board inside the case and not when it's outside, check to make sure nothing is touching the board from below. For example, if there is metal in the case, make sure it isn't loose or bent and possibly coming in contact with the bottom of the logic board.

That's the only really good reason I can think of that it works outside the case and not inside.
