Quadra 605 Back in Action - Need a CD Burner or DVD

It's been a while since I've had my Quadra 605 running. Packed all my Apple stuff up Dec 2006 preparing to move my family to Georgia whil I visited Iraq. Had it back up Jan of 2011 but had to move to Florida for my job. Moved back to Georgia this summer and setup the Quadra in my spare bedroom. I have so manny SCSI drives with files on them it will take me months to sort them all out not to mention all my floppies!

The Quadra is set up to dual boot Sys 7.5.5 or OS 8.1. It has 128MB RAM and a full 68040 33MHz but still runs at 25 MHz - I need to goose it up but the heat worries me. Maybe I need to find a spare case top & cut a hole in it for a huge heat sink?

I have a number of personall apps that I need to finish so I downloaded FutureBasic II (it's now freeware) to make sure I had the last version (I did - 2.3.1). I might try FB^3 later on but for now FB II will work just fine.

My goal is to get all my data off of the floppies and archive them to CDs. All my SCSI CD ROMS are not burners; just readers.

1. Any reccomended SCSI CD burners? Any to avoid?

2. Any preferred version of Toast for the Quadra 605?

3. Now for a LONG shot. Any way to use a DVD drive with the 605? How about a SCSI DVD burner? Toast support?

@33 mhz it does not get that hot, just attach a Heat sink.

/wo a heat sink it would on occasion / with out lid on get up to 130F

but is still way under an acceptable temperature range.

Well, I was gettin' ready to over-clock the Q605 when I looked at the CPU. It's marked:

X668040HRC25M

Which is a 25 MHZ chip, not a 33MHz like I thought. I put all my Mac 68xxx gear in storage in Dec 2006 and I *know* I bought a 33MHz CPU for it. Which means that the 33MHz CPU chip is SOMEWHERE in my storage unit

Here's what is in the Q605 (I have an external SCSI tower with 4 open bays, 1 internal bay):

My CD *IS* a burner. I forgot that I had bought the Yamaha burner 8-o

I need to get a heatsink for it. The issue is that the 128 MB RAM SIMM lies over the edge of the 68040 CPU. Makes for a very tight fit in the Q605. Anyone solved this problem before?

Any ideas on a heatsink? How would I hold it in place? No way I'm giving up the 128MB of RAM !

You could find a heatsink to suit quite easily; look out for a chipset heatsink or one from a 486. It can be attached by adhesive thermal paste, or with standard thermal paste + tiny dabs of superglue on two corners.

A couple things:

-25mhz 040 cpu will run at 33mhz or more all day long.

I agree with byrd.

you can put the heatsink back on w/o the clip just off center it a little. and use a few daps of super glue.

here is my LC475, 128megs, 25mhz full 040 @ 33mhz

I also have 2 q605's and they are both have full 25mhz 040's running at 33mhz

Thanks all. I measured the CPU top area that's clear and it's about 45mm (front to back) x 37mm (side to side) x 20mm high. I'll dig through my junk bins and see what I can come up with. Now to find that 33MHz CPU that's around here somewhere!

I found my 68040 33MHz CPU. It's on a 575 MOBO I picked in 2006 to build a Mystic. Completly forgot about it. I'll swap them around to night.

My intent is to push the 605 to 40MHz. Seems possible but heat will be an issue.
