Put in more memory and then problem. SE/30

Removed four 256 kb memory chips and installed four 1mb memory

chips into a SE/30. The computer gives a normal start up sound, then the smiling face mac, then two short musical notes followed by five or six musical notes. Then it just sits there.

The memory came from a SE/30. The total memory is 8 mb now. It has mode 32 on the hd.

Is there a cuda button to push?

*female monotone* You have experienced the Mac Chimes of Death. Please wait for more experienced personnel to come to your aid. Please remain calm as the authorities are attempting to rectify the situation. Thank you.

1) Are the contacts on both sides of your 1MB SIMMs clean or oxidized?

2) Which bank did you put them in?

3) If you put the original RAM back in and it works without the chimes of death, the you may have bad 1MB SIMMs. This is true even if they once worked fine in another machine. Static kills. But of course, if you can put those 1MB SIMMs back in that other machine and if they work, then that would be evidence the 1MB SIMMs are okay. In such a case, you just just try putting the 1MB SIMMs back in your SE/30 again. It could be oxidation that you cannot see with your eyes and putting them in a couple times may be enough to make good contact.

Alternatively, if one set of four DRAM SIMMs has larger capacity than the other, the larger cards must go in Bank A, except in the case of 17MB total. This must have the 4x256kB in Bank A and 4x4MB in Bank B.

If bank arrangement is is not the problem, see JDW.

Removed the new ram and it works. Put the new ram in by its self and it did not work. The new ram will not work. There was another memory

with two chips on it. The other SE/30 had a four chip stick. Put that in. What is it for?

As a generality, older compact AIOs do not work with two- or four-chip SIMMs. The density per chip is too high for the board's memory management logic. You are best off with 8-chip SIMMs, although 9-chip parity SIMMs from the PC world may work. The Mac simply ignores the ninth chip. I have met 2-chip 4MB SIMMs that worked in a Quadra 700, but that is a much advanced machine compared with the compact AIOs.

If outlay is not a problem for you, why not go straight to this seller for some 16MB SIMMs. You'll not get them cheaper elsewhere, and the SE/30 won't know itself with at least 64MB (and Mode32, or Mode32 7.5 if you use System 7.5).

Afterthought. This may be PBO, but your posts read as if you are not aware that SIMMs must be installed to fill a bank with four identical cards.

Just added four 4mb 3chip sticks for a total of 20mband it seems to run great. Will test out the 64mb pc ram tomorrow.

8MB 30-pin SIMMs, at least in the Mac world, are unusual. Usually, compatible cards for early Macs increase in size by a factor of four: 256kB, then 1MB, 4MB and 16MB, but 2MB is usable in a few of the compact AIOs. Apple's Service Source Memory Guide specifies 8MB for none of those Macs that use 30-pin SIMMs, so it will be interesting to see what results you get.

Funny that you mention 2mb memory. When I was raiding my Mac IIxx series of computers thats were the 2mb (Kingston KTA-2000/SI) and 4mb 3chip came from.

AFAIK, 8MB 30-pin SIMMs don't work on an SE/30 and a few other 030 macs as well. They do work on Quadra 700, Quadra 900, and 950

The guy showed up and the 8mb ram was 72 pin. He gave me a bag full of memory and found four 4mb 3chip sticks. Installed them and they got along with the other ones. Have 32mb's now. Installed 7.5 update 2 and a mac-con ethernet setup.

Yes. Just have your next three meals ready on a side-table when you start. With your new riches of RAM, you can make the experience better if you update to System 7.5.5 and polish up the 7.5.5.

If you have only Open Transport 1.1 at the moment, download and install 1.1.1 and 1.1.2.

I actually have Open Transport version 1.3 running nicely under 7.5.5 on my SE/30.
