Powerbook G3/266 problems after installing OS X

It's been a long time since I've done anything with Macs. I still have a lot of old 68k and PPC machines in storage, but I can't get to them now.

Over the last couple of weeks I've acquired a few Powerbooks. A Powerbook 5300, 1400cs, 3400c and the G3/266 I'm posting this from.

I installed OS X 10.2.8 on it and it has a couple of problems that I don't remember having when I used to run it on a G3 upgraded 7500.

I can't boot into OS 9 anymore. I select the OS 9 partition as the startup disk, then hit restart, but it boots OS X.

While booting OS X the display goes dark. After it has finished booting I can hit the brightness button and the backlight comes on again and stays on, but it will go off again when restarted. Sleep is disabled. Google pulls up some old posts on another forum. They suggest the problem goes away for a while if you boot into OS 9 or just to keep hitting the brightness button on boot up as there is no real fix.

Any ideas?
