Powerbook Duo 280c screen in a 230

I have 3 powerbook duos, a 230 in mint condition, a 280c in mint condition and a 280c in pieces not working (power supply area is shot, making a ticking sound) and I am wondering if putting the 280c screen into the 230 (which has a b/w screen) will make it work in color? I haven't opened the 230 to see if the connector fits from the 280c but I guess I will now, anyone have any input?

Lots of (most of?) of the Duo series components were interchangeable, and logic board replacements were certainly sold as upgrades in the series (re-suing screens already owned from the older machine), so it is not a massive, massive long shot to think that the 280c screen might possibly work on a 230. However, there's only one way to be sure....

According to this auction, the 230 and the 250 have the same logic board.

I'm going to bet that the 230/250 has enough vram, like the 280/280c, to run the colour screen.

Fail! Looks like the connection for the display is a different kind and a different size than the 280c. Very sad! Oh well. What a disappoint. I don't know what to do with this dead 280c? :'(

I'd keep it for parts. It is difficult to come by older LCDs from the 280. If you happen to damage the working version on your 280c then you will have a backup. I know I certainly wish I had a backup LCD for my 2300 that got damaged.

All the Color Duos have thicker Lids than the original, Passive Matrix, 230/210 and the Later, Active Matrix Grayscale 250, hence, the Color Screen Upgrade Lids for the original Dock and the same lid on the Dock Plus. The 230/250 MoBos are the same, as is the 270c's, IIRC. I believe there was more VRAM aboard the 250 & 270c, but I'm a bit rusty on my PRE PPC Duo lore.

Save your 280c for a 2300 MoBo upgrade, they're made to work with ALL preceding Duos, their screens and HDDs! They HAD to be compatible, because Apple Promised a PPC upgrade path for the 5k$ Duos from Day ONE and would have had an enormous class action suit brought against them had they not delivered!

I've got a whole load of duo parts units that ill probably end up putting up here, gotta go through it all.

I just want to get my PPC/540 going.

I have a 2300 on the way..I think the case is in fair shape, not like my good 280c which is almost perfect. I may put the 2300 board in the good 280c and maybe the replaced board will go inside the 2300 case...confusing but hopefully that will work out with the 2300 screen! FrankenDuos

Probably won't work out exactly the way you want. Is the 280c screen 640x400 or 640x480? If the latter, you've got a shot at running the 2300c's 640x480 LCD off the 280c MoBo.

Dunno, too tired to think much ATM. :scrambled:
