PowerBook 1400c Not booting

I got a friend that says his PowerBook 1400c is not booting up. I am wondering if a half-dead PRAM is better than no PRAM, or is no pram battery better than a half-dead.

He said that the PRAM is only 4.4v out of 4.5v

The main battery might be dead. Remove the battery and try to boot just with the line power adaptor for supply.

A corrupted PRAM may cause problems. To completely erase the PRAM you could remove the battery and the power adaptor, then hold the reset button for a while. Then reconnect the power adaptor and try to boot.

An option to remove any residual trace of charge from the mainboard to kill any memory buffer is to remove all power supplies and press the start button on the keyboard for several hours. This worked for me once after several crashes left the PB in an unbootable state.

Some machines like the LC475 are known to be not bootable without an operational battery to supply the PRAM, but this is _not true_ for the PB1400.

To replace the PRAM-Buffer batteries, get detailed information first, read and reread how to dismantle the PB1400 before taking it apart. Some part suppliers provide very well illustrated instructions for any PowerBook. On my PB1400 I removed the internal diskdrive and put a connector for a set of four AAA alkaline batteries inside (choose high quality leak proof batteries only). A compact flash card in a PC-Card adaptor works very well as a replacement for the internal harddisk. Be sure how to connect the wiring properly, otherwise you might damage the computer.
