Power Macintosh 8600 motherboard fit in 8500 case

Hello all, need some help.
My power Macintosh 8500 is no longer booting. It literally stopped working in front of my eyes. It was running the OS and froze. I powered off and on , and now after the chime I’m stuck at the grey screen with moving mouse pointer. (Tried everything to make it go pram reset , battery removal, ram switch, reseated cpu card etc.)
I have access to an 8600 mainboard for a reasonable price. Does anyone know if it will fit without modification in an 8500 tower case? Thank you.

Waddya know.. left it turned off for 30 minutes without battery and it boots fine… maybe it’s a thermal issue… I’m running the board outside the case .. with a fan blowing on the cpu card… maybe it’s not enough to keep other components from overheating …. Or maybe I’m just unlucky!

Glad it recovered. I’m pretty sure some modification would have been needed. I was not able to put my 9500 logic board in my 9600 case without making some changes (location of power switch didn’t match for example, if I recall correctly), so I ended up buying a 9600 logic board, and plan to frame the 9500 board and use it for art.

Thanks buddy. I’ll keep that in mind for the future.

yeah I have to be inclined to point out that 8500 and 8600 may seem physically same but are functionally different enough to not directly drop-in for each others [and likewise to 9500 vs 9600] .. even macguru shows different edge notches and not-same power button location for their logic board drawings etc
