Will a Preforma 6500 motherboard work in a Powermac 5500 monitor chassis

Hello All,

I am looking for some assistance with my Powermac 5500/275 I bought this with a faulty motherboard which had bad battery damage which had killed the capacitor pads near it I came across a 6500/250 mobo which from what i can see is exactly the same mobo with he exception of the 25mhz.

however when I try and power up the 6500 with the 5500 All in one chassis it gives the Apple Chime and then it just stays on the grey/whitish screen with the mouse cursor which will move around when moving the mouse but it never gets any further. it does allow me to do a PRAM reset but after it just returns to that screen

Has anyone experienced this before, is it because the 6500 is not compatible with the 5500 all in one chassis? just to add, the All in one chassis works fine with an 5400 mobo.

let me know you thoughts and expertise on this.

Update: I've also tried removing the hard drive to see if that helps, no change

It should be an identical board, so there is something not working right.

Can I see some pictures of the 6500 board you are trying to use please?

Has the 6500 board been tested in anything else, do you know if it definitely works?

Some quick things to try, helps rule things out...

Reseat all the cards/SIMMs
Contact cleaner into all of the sockets and on the edge connector
Try without the Sonnet accelerator

Grey screen / rounded corners / cursor is good - it means it's got through a lot of the startup process already.

No change without sonnet Accelerator
I've tried it with another Simm no change.

I'll try and clean all sockets and edge connector now.

You da man @joshc cleaned the edge connector with an eraser and then a wipe over with Isopropyl Alcohol which I also used with a toothbrush to clean all sockets and the machine booted with the cd drive and now the HDD

the sonnet I had in my 5400 mobo but I wanted the correct mobo for the Chassis I'm hoping I can get the combo PCI card to work in it now because they mentioned the 6500 in that thread
