performat 6116cd and sys disks

I recently got a performa 6116cd for my collection to replace my dead 6100/66 powermac. The board is dead on the 6100 but i did salvage the dos compatibility card (works tested in a quadra 650 i have laying around), the cache simm (256k), hd, cd, and simms. Anyway, since the performa is a copy of the 6100 but 6mhz slower, I am going to put the cache simm in it and the dos card. My questions, are since the cache simm is 256k, is it possible to put a 512k if it exists or even a 1mb one in it? I want this sys to run fast as im going to stick the dos card and even later yank its dx2 66 out and mb put a dx4 overdrive 100 in it. I did search and came across this link here but if I read it right you can use a 1mb in a 6100 right? The link is viewtopic.php?f=16&t=7627&hilit=powermac+6100+cache.

Also I did search and somehow stumbled on apples site listing various powermac models using cache simms, and the6100 is listed as only supporting 256k max? But i did find a cache simm for 7200 on fleabay, the 1 mb model, plus ill look elsewhere. So would that 1mb work or even a 512k? Also what about performance would anything above 256k make a real difference especially since i read about the onboard video?

Finally, of the various macs i've collected, this newly acquired one, a quadra 950, and a quadra 650/centris 650, need a new install of the os. If i've been reading correctly the 68k macs would be fine with sys 7.5.5 right? As for the performa since it has a cd i can go sys 7.5.5 or i do have a cd with mac os 8 retail for it, or even 9 if needed. But one thing is i dont have the diskettes for 7.5.5. From what ive read you can dwl it from apple but its 19 disks and u mount it on hd then install. But the 68k machines i have dont have an os install, is it possible to make the diskettes or full retail install disks from the apple downloads? I've seen someone selling it on ebay but its new unopened retail disks but a little too pricey @ the moment. One last question too, as for the dos card if i went with a dx4 on it, i have heard the 6100/6116cd have heat issues, this wont really fry the board or dos card right? The dx4 has a heatsink and all necessary voltage regs as it is an overdrive 100mhz.

Thanks in advance.

Ok very long post here. Ill try and simplify and help hopefully.

The cards will go right from the 6100 into the other.

The powermac will take up to OS 8.1 without a G3 card. I have two and 7.5.5 works best with no G3 in my opinion.

Yes you can make floppies from apples website on any Mac with a built in floppy drive. External floppy drives and disk copy have issues.

Heat issues can burn up that board especially due to age and such. If you have a quadra use it in that, it will have a better flow of air past the card. Plus these days G3 cards are getting cheaper and with the video card both make the pizza box power macs pretty snappy.

I can make you a copy of 7.5 if you just can't get it done.

I hope that helps.

Oh and the cache is 256, it was just the limit.

If you try more they did nothing to support it.

The Houdini DOS card is a snug fit in the 6100 so the processor will get hot and heat the Mac logic board. Another consideration is that the 6100 power supply is not very generous and some were unreliable when new.

On the cache SIMM question, larger SIMMs were available from third party suppliers. You should be able to offset any potential cache gain by fitting lots of RAM and a faster (low power!) hard disk.

Experiment with available 72 pin SIMMs and try to install as much as possible on the DOS card. If you attain 16MB or more, configure a RAM disk and organise your apps to use it.

You can actually run 8.6 on a Nubus PowerMac. It'll be slower than 7.5.5, but seems to be about the same, speed-wise as 8.1, maybe a little quicker, since there's no 68k code in it. I've not tried running 9.2.2 on one, but I do have a hacked version that I originally installed on a 7500/100 that I plan to try with the Piltdown Man board once I get a 6100 chassis. Was going to use the 660av chassis that I have, but didn't want to hack up the back panel.

Thx for the help guys. But one thing I did originally try the dos card in a quadra/centris 650 i have laying around. The story is my 1st 6100 ppc i was given the board died, but before it did the orig owner had 7.5 installed on it, so i upg that to 8.1 as i have that. But then when i was 1st reading about the dos card, i installed the latest pc prg for it, i think version 2.something, its been awhile. Anyway it worked somewhat but i couldnt switch to the dos side, so when i went to try again the 6100 no boot or chime. So i put it in the above mentioned sys which had 8.1, 32 mb sys ram, so on, and kept getting a bus error on boot up, unless i booted the mach. with extensions off, so i even removed and used the older 1.x version and still never got it to work. I can see about the heat issue and would like to get this card to wrk in the 650 vs. the 6100. What exactly is a bus error? I'm a pc person, so my understanding is if i use the latest pc driver for that card 2.x and under os 8.1 in a nubus slot on that mac, with the spider cable connected properly it should work right? Finally, yes i have the pg bk marked somewhere where it shows howto put this card in another 68k mac other than the 6100, i just thought that mb the extension has a prob w/68k cpus and not w/ppc?

I'm going to try again but i guess i'll do a fresh os 8.1 on the 650, as it was upg to it before, and put this card back in it and post back. Also i even did the pram rst on the 650 and still had that bus error?

Thanks.
