Performa 5500/6500 Comm Slot II Flakey?

Hey Guys,

I've got a question for you. So I've got this Colour Classic upgraded with a Performa 5500/6500 logic board and I've been experiencing intermittend issues with the Comm Slot II Ethernet for a good while now. At times when I boot I get "Type 11" errors (bus errors) which I at first blamed on possible insufficient power (the extra PSU was indeed too small for the system). Now that I've changed PSUs, other issues are gone (dimming screen etc) but I'd still get the bus errors on boot at times. Sometimes the cards would be detected but wouldn't communicate properly or would lock up once I attempted to use the network (or the installed USB card for that matter). At other times they would not be detected at all. I've used the Apple CS II, Farallon 10/100 CS II, and the Sonic-T CS II cards all the same.

Yesterday I've gotten "Type 11" errors again, so I tried wiggling the card a bit and booted the system again... it's been running perfectly for hours now. Network works fine, even USB access won't crash the system. It obviously sounds like that my CS II slot may be faulty, but then, is this something common for this particular series of systems (everybody has to wiggle their cards at times) or do you guys think a new logic board may alleviate this issue? It's aggravating as hell having to wiggle the thing until it works and then hope and PRAY that one doesn't have to move the system causing it to lose connection again... :disapprove:

In a 10/100 PCI card that I have, the wires in the RJ45 receptacle were so bent that connection with the ethernet patch cord was compromised. Bending them back to their original position fixed it. Worth a peek....

I will check my card when I get home tonight, but since I've been using three different cards I don't think that this would be the issue in my particular case (there is, of course, a good possibility for that). I thought I read some time back that the CS II cards can be somewhat *loose* when comparing them to e.g. PCI cards which are usually secured to the case with a screw, which is not the case with the Comm Slot cards. But again, I suspect that I may actually have a faulty port ... :disapprove:
