OS9 on Cube 7448

Hi, I've got a Cube, upgraded with a PowerLogix 7448 1.7GHz CPU card.

Now, I'd *really* like to be able to install OS9 on this machine. But I can't seem to get the damn thing right! According to PowerLogix, ONLY version 9.2.2 works on the 7448

I do *not* have the "Firewire Target Disk" option, as I have no other PowerPC computer to use when installing. So I'm stuck with installing *directly* on the Cube.

I've set the machine to boot to OS9 in the firmware setup cd that came with the PowerLogix processor.

Then I:

1.) Popped in the original G4 Cube Installer CDROM - no go ( I *think* this is OS 9.0.4)

2.) Tried an OS 9.2.2 CD I got off the internet - no go

3. and 4.) Tried to burn (with Toast 9) a new installer CD from a .dmg of 9.04 and 9.2.2, both with the "Apple CPU Plugins" extension removed - neither disc will boot!

Now I'm really mad - I mean, how hard can this really be?!?!?

Perhaps I need to offload the Cube and be done with it... - though I'd hate to see it go!

Any thoughts?

Yeah, the only thing I can think of is to get a cheap G4 CPU online, like one that came out of a sawtooth or something. (I looked at pictures and they theoretically should work. both computer having 100mhz fsb.) Probably look on eBay or something.

That's all I can think of. Since you've tried basically everything else. Probably would work too. I hope.

If you still have the original CPU, swap that in, install, and swap back. You might want to get a legit full retail copy of 9.2.2. as well.

Is the optical drive known good? ie will it boot an OS X CD?

The only other thing I can suggest is to install OS X first, making sure you format the drive with MacOS 9 drivers as well.

Offloading the Cube would be a bit of an over-reaction IMHO. Keep on plugging, you'll get it eventually.

I think I might have cracked my own problem; enabling me to install OS 9.2.2 without my original cube CPU, and without installing on another computer:

1. re-install Mac OS 10.4 (Currently OS 10.5 is installed)

2. Install OS 9 in Classic mode (or whatever it's called)

3. Install Toast 4 in OS 9, enabling me to cook a custom, bootable OS 9.2.2 install cd-rom *without* the Apple CPU enabler

4. Install OS 9 as per usual

Will let you all know how it goes.

It would have been easier to follow Bunsen's advice. If you still have the original CPU, put that one back in the Cube, install OS 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 upgrade, then put the CPU upgrade back in the Cube. You'll be saving yourself a lot of grief.

Yes, I know. Only problem; I seem to have misplaced the CPU... *Grrrrrr*

Same problem applies to the "SuperDrive"; the original optical drive have gone missing as well, and the replacement Pionner DVR-K06 has developed the infamous dead CD-ROM-laser.

Now I use an external Blu-Ray burner, connected via firewire instead.

Will look for an original CPU and follow that route.
