Now I'm on the fence Plus vs SE/30

no I'm not going to have two...

but I keep heming and hawing about snagging that SE/30 from my boss some how. (I used it today, made me think...)

so I have a plus and finally have a good working keyboard. The plus is in VERY nice shape. clean case with only very light yellowing(100% even tone, even on the back so I doubt it saw much sunlight, if any.) inside is totally clean, the screen is AMAZING the tube is like new, 0 burn in, very sharp, clear and BRIGHT! works 100% and has 4MB of RAM.

SE/30 is yellowed, (noticeable difference between the front and rear) the screen has a lot of burn in and is not very bright. it is in need of a recapping ASAP (bad leakage, but it still is working) Nice thing, it has built in ethernet, is a bit faster than the plus, 8MB of RAM 80MB HDD everything works. can read/write 1.44MB floppies

only thought, can the SE/30 run 7.6.1? if not its less desirable(need 7.6.1 to connect to my 10.5 server). Plus I know full well can't run it, but I have less desire to go online with that one, it's fine standalone playing some vintage games... better running system 6 anyhow.

No I'm not going to keep two, trying to keep this all to a minimum. I will probably just keep the plus(bit more nostalgia, since a plus was my first mac) and I *think* it will do better in the long term, storage wise. Gah, clutter is driving me up the wall! I just like things to have a 'place' and be neat and tidy... funny because I'm kind of messy too. Must be age or something, turning me into a neat freak. hehe.

ill re-cap the se/30 for you, for free just catch the return shipping.
:simasimac: |)
If it goes that way you know I'll take you up on that. Maybe I'll just snag the ethernet card out of it than tuck that away until I find a better SE/30 to put it in. :p

See how I feel once the powerbook is gone. maybe send you another box of random to reduce my clutter ;)

Neither machine is very large. So, unless you're living in a dog crate (which I doubt), I suspect you could get both and keep them. With one of Dougg3's ROM SIMMs and a IIsi ROM image, the SE/30 will do 7.6.x... For that matter, with the Born Again patch, it should do 8.1 with said ROM. I did run one of my old IIsi machines under 8.1. It was slow, but useable. Felt like a Mac II or an SE running 7.x...

Man I wish there was a way I could get the cpu on its own clock, and run that bad boy up to like 25 MHz

The SE/30 could sure use a little boost.

Just like my IIsi running at 29mhz, it really makes it much more enjoyable to use.

Wife, two kids and 1,140 sq ft. may as well be a dog crate |)

sure I have plenty of room in the crawl space upstairs to put some stuff, but I want to USE it, very little space for that. right now it's set up on an old table in the 'attic' (it's a bungalow, really it's just an unfinished space off one of the bedrooms) Access to it is through my son's bedroom, making late night usage unpossible.

running 7.6 with a new rom huh? hummm...

I feel your pain. For the first time ever I have room away from my kids I can set up all I want. Only took fourty years. If you were closer I'd just let you store it here. Sorry on the tough choice. I know either way you'll feel some wanting after.

Ok, so if I can pull it off. Get SE/30, swap the tube out of the plus and put it in the SE/30 get a dougg3 ROM (uniserver, you have the programmer?, I could send you a IIsi rom to put on for me while you're recapping it? That'll save some dough) The big bonus I just realized while testing the SE/30 here at work... it does NOT require the use of a 10baseT hub like the Etherprint and Asante require, it worked right off the gigabit switch at work. that REALLY cuts down on the clutter of random things (no more dangly cords, power bricks, etc) Oh and find the smaller apple ADB keyboard, this one has a big power computing keyboard, doesn't fit in the bag.

Now it's up to my negotiating skills

Kind of how I look on a lot of this, 18-20 years or so I will have a space(and money!) I can use for this sort of thing. Than I can tinker all I want.

Just include 30.00 cash with the board, I have a extra ROM already made up. It's also loaded up with 7.01 /w apps too.

You can make an offer with this guy, 16meg 30pin simms he has accepted my $7.50 offer before. Maybe at-least pick up 4, get you up to 64 megs of ram.

you know, you're not making my downsizing work the way it should. :p 16-32MB would be fine the PB with 10MB did just fine. 6.0.8 would be nice on the ROM, zippy speedy SE/30

so I got to borrow it... but was told, 'don't break it I want to sell it' :-/ he's going to want high eBay retail for sure. Oh well. least I can play with it for a bit.

well i'm not going to re cap it for free if he is just going to sell it on you.

maybe you could get in-touch with maceffects and just get your very own SE/30 from him?

I'm pretty sure I've got one of those small ADB keyboards you can have for shipping if you want.

As for your dilemma, I would like to suggest getting the SE/30 (and having uniserver recap it). And then find an SE motherboard. When you need a 68000 fix swap the logic boards. Don't know if you'd need the superdrive ROMs to use the floppy though.

You wouldn't, except you won't be able to use 1.4MB floppies without them (the SuperDrive will function as a regular 800k drive).

A built in ethernet for the SE30 that doesn't require the 10baseT hub like the Etherprint and Asante require is really interesting! So you can connect it to a 10/100 router and it works fine? Does anyone know what that ethernet card could be?

My All my LC's - Asante + many other brands work

the SE/30 - cabletron systems

the IIsi - Mac Con Asante

the IIcx w/ 10.100 nubus nic Asante

the IIci w/ 10.100 nubus nic Asante

they all connect just like how they should to my 10.100.1000 switch.

I'v never had a 8mhz SE Nic, but maybe those are a different?

Tell your boss that he can't sell it because it's broken (if you can find some way to prove that you didn't break it). Maybe then he'll give it to you.
