Not work boot disk for Macintosh Classic II. Please Help :(

I have an old Macintosh Classic II computer. Lately, instead of booting normally, it has been flashing a disk icon with a question mark on it.

I need to boot it from a floppy. Unfortunately, I have tried many things, including:

- A homemade 6.0.8 floppy (from here) (interestingly, this worked in getting a happy mac, but after that atttempt, the disk is immediately ejected.

- System 7.0.1 from Apple site (2 install disks) immediately ejected (

- System 7.5 disk repair tools getting a happy mac and ejected (

- Various other systems and downloads off the Web, all of which are ejected.

Please help !!

Is the floppy drive in the Classic II known to be working? Perhaps it needs to be cleaned and lubricated.

Several of my floppy drives are like this, so that a disk copied in one will not work in another. It is a sign of them getting on in years, but happily, they can often be rejuvenated.

filipp76,

Your model Macintosh needs, at minimum, System Software version 7.0.1 in order for it to work. That's why it ejected the System 6.0.8 floppy. If you'd like, send me a private message (PM) and we can arrange for me to send you a set of boot disks. Let me know if you are interested.

Actually the minimum SS for a Classic II is 6.0.8L. I have it on mine.

Yes, System 6.0.8L, not the regular System 6.0.8. There is a difference - the regular System 6.0.8 will boot any Macintosh originally designed to run it, but not the Classic II. System 6.0.8L will only boot the LC, LC II, PowerBook 100, and Classic II (in fact, its the only version of System 6 that will boot the Classic II)

Okay, I didn't know that. I was referencing Mactracker for info on the Classic II. I guess this is something MT's author didn't realize, either. I'll send them a note and have them correct this in the future.

Thanks. 73s de Phreakout. :rambo:

I download Mactracker but I cannot find the information necessary to me.

Will work the HDD through the 68pin to 50pin adapter?

Mactracker is basically an eyeball level program that provides hardware and software specs of your Apple-branded product(s). It is good only to know what you have and what is under the hood, as far as stock parts goes.

I believe you should have no problems using the 68-pin to 50-pin adapter, provided that the SCSI ID on the drive and adapter are set to 0 and SCSI termination is enabled. If you have a non-Apple or non-Mac formatted drive, you will need to use a "patched" copy of Apple SC HD Setup 7.3.5 or Lido 7.6.5 or HWB Toolkit to format the hard drive to the correct partition type.

in the description of my new HDD is written:

The Atlas 10K wide disk drive is manufactured as an Ultra2 Multi-Mode LVD device only. This drive does not provide for onboard SCSI bus termination. Refer to your system or SCSI controller documentation regarding recommendations on SCSI bus termination.

it will work or not?

First off,

Correction: Lido 7.5.6, not 7.6.5. Darned math dyslexia... :I

Second,

Unfortunately, I haven't found anyone online that actually links a disk image floppy with the "patched" SC HD setup utility. I've had to put the two elements together and make my own. It's not that hard to do. Just download the System software version of choice and then download the link for Apple HD SC Setup 7.3.5. You can get both at Apple, Inc.'s web site. Be aware that Apple's doesn't have the patched version. You'll have to do that yourself using these instructions.

Before going any further, I am guessing you don't any other Mac that is running System 7.x.x, Mac OS 8.x.x or Mac OS 9.x.x, right? If that's true, then someone (like me) will need to get you hooked up with a copy. **PM me and I can help you out.**

Third,

Okay, after doing further research, your hard drive shouldn't have to worry about having termination enabled. It is an LVD (Low Voltage Differential) standard that adding termination will be like throwing a wrench in the works. And as far as setting the SCSI ID goes, you can try just leaving the jumpers the way they are now or place the jumpers on the 4th pair going away from Pin 1. Please refer to Seagate's Support page regarding setting the ID.
